Arizona cruises to victory

Arizona did what was expected on Saturday night as it easily defeated South Carolina State. read on for a complete look at how the Wildcats did it.

The outcome was never in doubt on Saturday night, as Arizona defeated South Carolina State 56-0 at Arizona Stadium.

Arizona started on its own 25-yard line and two plays into the drive Matt Scott found Terrence Miller for a seven-yard pass followed by an eight-yard run by Scott. After a five-yard completion to Dan Buckner, Scott completed a 20-yard pass to Austin Hill followed by one for six and ten yards. Two plays later, Scott hit an open Richard Morrison in the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown, as the extra point made it 7-0 with 12:01 left in the first quarter.

SCSU took over on its own 24-yard line and was able to convert a 13-yard pass on third down from Richard Cue to Tyler McDonald. Arizona's defense then tightened up a bit and forced a punt soon after, getting the ball on its own 22-yard line.

Arizona tried to answer with an 11-yard pass to Ka'Deem Carey followed by a 15-yard pass to Dan Buckner. After a six-yard completion to Richard Morrison, he fumbled on the next play and SCSU recovered on its own 45-yard line.

The Wildcats were then able to force a three and out and took over on their own 32-yard line with 6:51 left in the first quarter. Carey started the drive with a seven-yard run and Scott followed with 11 yards in the ground. Two plays later, Scott hit Buckner for seven yards and Buckner drew a pass interference call on the next play, bringing Arizona to the 28.

Carey proceeded to gain 8, 6, and three yards on the ground and two plays later, Scott completed a four-yard pass to Miller. John Bonano came in to attempt the 24-yard field goal, but missed it with three minutes left in the first quarter.

SCSU was unable to get much going offensively and Arizona went into the second quarter up 7-0 with SCSU punting.

The Wildcats started the second quarter on its own 47-yard line with a 15-yard run by Carey followed by a nine-yard reception by Hill. Arizona then had a few short gains before Scott hit Tutogi for a 14-yard touchdown reception, as the extra point made it 14-0 with 12:36 left in the first half.

Arizona forced a three and out before getting the ball on its own 28. Two plays into the drive, Scott found Tyler Slavin for a nine-yard reception. On third down, Scott picked up the first down with a 19-yard run and three plays later, found David Richards for a seven-yard completion. After a six-yard run by Carey, Hill caught an 11-yard pass and Carey ran it in from 13 yards out as the extra point made it 21-0 with 7:13 left in the second quarter.

After a personal foul and delay of game penalty, Julius Pendergrass gained 15 yards on the ground. However, on the next play, Jonathan McKnight came up with an interception at midfield. Arizona was unable to get anything going and was forced to punt with under six minutes to go in the first half.

The Wildcats got the ball back quickly and started the drive with an 11-yard pass to Slavin and another for five yards. Two plays later, Daniel Jenkins gained nine on the ground and two plays after that, Scott ran it in from ten yards out, as the extra point made it 28-0 at the end of the first half.

SCSU started with the ball on its own 25 as Cue completed a 12-yard pass to McDonald. Three plays later, Arizona was called for pass interference and Cue found Pendergrass for seven yards to its own 47-yard line. On the next play, Jourdon Grandon was called for pass interference, but a SCSU personal foul stalled the drive and forced it to punt, giving Arizona the ball on the UA 19.

Scott started the drive with a 24-yard pass to Buckner followed by a seven-yard gain on a reverse by Morrison. Tutogi then caught a three-yard pass to the SCSU 46 and it was followed by a 16-yard pass to Slavin. Two plays later, Scott connected with Buckner for a 27-yard touchdown with the extra point making it 35-0 with 9:37 left in the third.

South Carolina State struggled once again to get something going, despite a 14-yard completion from Cue to McDonald. After that completion, SCSU had to punt three plays later and Arizona took over on its own 20-yard line.

The Wildcats continued to move at will on offense, starting the drive with a seven-yard pass to Richards followed by an 11-yard reception by Johnny Jackson and another for eight yards. Daniel Jenkins then gained seven on the ground, Bucker seven in the air, and Jenkins seven more on the ground. A personal foul brought the Wildcats to the 19-yard line and two plays after a ten-yard pass to Slavin, Jenkins ran it in from five yards out with the extra point making it 42-0 to end the third quarter.

After forcing another punt, Scott's night ended and B.J. Denker came in. Two plays into the drive, Denker found Jackson for an eight-yard reception, which was the first complete pass of Denker's career. Jenkins then gained seven on the ground followed by a six-yard completion to Garic Wharton. Jackson caught a 13-yard pass and two plays later, Jenkins gained nine on the ground. Two more after that, Jenkins did the same thing.

SCSU was called for pass interference two plays later, putting the Wildcats on the 20-yard line. Arizona was eventually forced into a fourth and seven situation where Denker found Sean Willet for his first career touchdown, a 17-yard grab, as the extra point made it 49-0 with a little over ten minutes left.

Jared Baker would later add a four-yard touchdown run to go up 56-0 with under six minutes left and the rest of the game was just a matter of getting other guys some snaps.
