Instead, it did just the opposite.
Arizona defeated USC 39-36 Saturday at Arizona Stadium despite being down 28-13 in the third quarter.
USC started on its own 25-yard line with a nine-yard pass from Matt Barkley to Marqise Lee two plays into the drive. Silas Redd then gained four yards on the ground and Robert Woods caught a 15-yard pass two plays later.
Barkley ran for 11 yards on the next play and three plays later, Lee gained eight in the air. However, Max Tuerk was called for a personal foul on the next play and two plays later, Marquis Flowers picked off Barkley.
Arizona took the ball at its own 40-yard line and got two runs for a combined five yards from Ka'Deem Carey. Two plays later, T.J. McDonald was called for taunting to keep Arizona's drive alive after an incomplete pass on third down. Two plays after that, Austin Hill caught a 30-yard pass from Matt Scott and another two plays later, Scott found Johnny Jackson for the eight-yard touchdown as the extra point made it 7-0 with 7:20 to go in the first quarter.
USC's penalty woes continues with an offensive pass interference call on the first play from scrimmage and a false start on the following play. Barkley got it back and then some with a 57-yard pass to Woods and three plays later, found him for 10. Arizona forced the fourth and two and Arizona was able to come up with a stop to force a turnover on downs.
On Arizona's first play from scrimmage, Scott hit Hill for 56 yards and Carey gained nine more in the air to bring Arizona to USC's 20-yard line. Scott then gained six on the ground and Carey added seven in the air. Two plays later, Hill caught a five-yard pass to the one-yard line, but a holding penalty on the next play negated a Carey touchdown.
The USC penalties continues, however, as Leonard Williams was called for a personal foul and Arizona settled for a 27-yard field goal to make it 10-0 to end the first quarter.
USC started moving down the field right away with an eight-yard pass from Barkley to Lee. D.J. Morgan then gained 18 on one run and 10 on the next to bring the ball to the Arizona 40. On the next play, Woods gained 11 on the ground and followed it up with 12 two plays later. However, Redd fumbled on the next play and Arizona was able to recover on its own 10-yard line with over 13 minutes to go in the second quarter.
Arizona tried to get something going with a four-yard run by Scott followed by a six-yard pass to Dan Buckner. Carey then picked up 13 on the ground, but the drive stalled and the Wildcats were forced to punt, giving the Trojans the ball on their own 15.
USC got its drive started with a very questionable personal foul call on Grandon followed by a 50-yard pass from Barkley to Lee. Two plays later, Shaquille Richardson was called for a facemask and USC had first and ten at Arizona's 12-yard line.
On the next play, Barkley rolled out and found an open Xavier Grimble for the 12-yard score, as the extra point made it 10-7 with 10:07 left in the first half.
USC forced Arizona into a three and out thanks to two penalties and the Wildcats were then called for kick interference, giving the Trojans the ball on their own 48-yard line to start the drive.
Thankfully for Arizona, Barkley made a bad decision two plays into the USC drive, as he threw an interception right to Flowers.
Arizona got the ball on its own 34-yard line and Carey gained four yards on the ground, followed by a 20-yard pass to Hill. On the next play, Hill gained 12 more to get to the USC 30, as Carey got two on the ground on first down.
Arizona then got called for a false start and after two incompletions, Arizona was forced into third down. It looked as if Scott would pick it up on the ground, but an illegal block forced a 4th and 15 in which Scott was unable to connect with Tyler Slavin.
Starting on their own 35-yard line, the Trojans were able to get 13 yards on the ground from Redd. The Wildcats then forced a third down and six, but Barkley hit Lee for a 49-yard touchdown with the extra point making it 14-10 with 4:36 left in the first half.
Looking for an answer, Arizona started on its own 25-yard line with a 14-yard pass to Hill followed by a seven-yard pass to Slavin. Scott then gained 11 on the ground and a USC personal foul added 15 more. On the next play, Scott threw an interception to Jawanza Starling, who gave the ball back to Arizona on a fumble.
Arizona was only able to gained one yard on a pass to Carey before John Bonano kicked a 45-yard field goal to make it 14-13 with 2:38 left in the first half.
It did not take long for USC to strike, as Barkley found Lee for 32 yards to the Arizona 45-yard line and three plays later, connected with him for 15. On the next play, Lee gained 28 yards to the Arizona three-yard line and Morgan easily scored on the next play, as the extra point made it 21-13 in favor of USC with 42 seconds left in the first half.
Daniel Jenkins was able to return the kickoff for 56 yards to the USC 40 and two plays into the ensuing drive, Scott gained 15 on the ground with 21 seconds left in the half. Scott then completed a 10-yard pass to Buckner and a six-yard pass to Hill to the USC 9. After an incomplete pass, Arizona settled for the 27-yard field goal, which was good. Unfortunately, Arizona was called for holding and the ensuing field goal then missed to end the half.
USC ended the first half with 395 total yards compared to 285 yards for Arizona. Lee finished the half with 12 catches for 255 yards, while Hill had 7 catches for 143 yards for Arizona.
Arizona got the ball on its own 30-yard line to start the half, but besides a four-yard run by Carey, could not get anything going and was forced into a three and out.
USC started on its own 14 and it took two plays for Redd to gain 12 on the ground. Two plays later, Woods gained 25 in the air and three plays after that, Barkley found Lee yet again, this time for a 44-yard touchdown as the extra point made it 28-13 with 10:37 left in the third quarter.
Arizona's offense continued to struggle despite starting the drive with a 14-yard completion to Hill. Garic Wharton then caught a seven-yard pass and Scott gained seven on the ground before the drive stalled and the Wildcats were forced to punt.
Arizona turned around and forced USC into a third and out of its own and took over on its own 32-yard line. Scott was able to hit Buckner for 13 yards, but got nothing after that, as Arizona once again had to punt it, giving USC the ball on its own 13. The Trojans basically matched Arizona's production, as they were forced into a three and out as well.
Arizona started on its own 28-yard line desperately needing a score with a 15-yard pass to Carey. Three plays later, Scott connected with Hill in the slot for 42 yards and on the next play, Scott ran it in from 10 yards out, as the extra point made it 28-20 with 3:56 left in the third quarter.
USC started on its own 25 with a 13-yard pass to Woods followed by a sack by Sir Thomas Jackson and Hank Hobson. On the next play, USC running back D.J. Morgan fumbled, giving Arizona the ball at the Trojans' 37.
On the first play from scrimmage, Buckner caught a 17-yard pass and Scott gained five on the ground on the next play. Carey then picked up six yards to the USC nine-yard line and Scott connected with Buckner for the nine-yard touchdown, as the failed two-point conversion kept it at 28-26 in favor of USC with 1:42 left in the third quarter.
Taking over on his own 30, Barkley hit Lee for 14 yards and Redd followed with seven on the ground. Grimble then grabbed a 17-yard catch and Arizona forced an incomplete pass on fourth down, but Taimi Tutogi was offsides, giving the Trojans another chance. On fourth and two, USc tried a reverse and Arizona came up with the stop again, taking over on its own 28-yard line.
Carey started the drive with a five-yard run and a few plays later, an offensive pass interference call forced a 3rd and 22. On that third down, Scott found an open Hill for 60 yards and Carey followed with seven on the ground. Scott then gained ten of his own on the ground to the USC seven-yard line and Carey ran it in two plays later, as the failed two-point conversion kept it at 32-28 with 10:46 left in the fourth quarter.
The Trojans took over on their own 17-yard line, but threw two incomplete passes before a Reggie Gilbert sack forced a punt and gave the UA the ball on the USC 49.
Carey started the drive with a seven-yard run and Scott then combined for nine yards on two plays on the ground. Scott connected with David Richards for seven yards and then gained ten on the ground on the next two plays combined. A personal foul gave the Wildcats the ball at the USC 9. It took three plays for Arizona to score, as Scott found Richards on a six-yard slant pattern with 5:36 left with the extra point making it 39-28.
USC did not take long to answer, as Lee returned the kickoff to Arizona's 27-yard line. Two plays later, Lee caught a 17-yard pass and then Redd followed with a 10-yard touchdown, as the extra point made it 39-36 with 4:40 left.
Arizona went into time-killing mode on its drive and USC got the ball back with 55 seconds left. The drive started on its own 13-yard line with a 13-yard run by Redd. Lee then gained 15 in the air and Redd added 13 more on the ground. However, the drive then stalled and a last-second Hail Mary was knocked down to give the Wildcats the win.
