The Wildcats used numerous lineups and balance to defeat the Lumberjacks 108-67 on Wednesday night.
Mark Lyons scored the first three points for Arizona and Kaleb Tarczewski added a three-point play to help Arizona jump out to a 6-0 lead. Nick Johnson followed with a dunk and Lyons added his second three-pointer to force a Humboldt State timeout with the Wildcats up 11-0 with 16:45 left in the first half.
The Lumberjacks scored their first points of the game off an Alec Williams dunk, but Solomon Hill answered with his first bucket of the game and Jordin Mayes added a free throw to put Arizona up 14-2 with about 15 minutes left in the half. A three-pointer by Jerrett extended the lead to 15 points before Humboldt State finally got on the board again with a three-pointer by Ethan Dillard.
Brandon Ashley scored his first points of the game with two free throws and Mayes hit one of two from the line as well to give the Wildcats the 20-5 lead with 12 minutes left in the first half. Ashley then hit a baseline jumper to extend that lead to 17 shortly after. Hill brought that lead to 19 from the free throw line before Cody Kale hit a jumper for the Lumberjacks.
However, Hill answered with a jumper and Lyons made a free throw for Arizona's largest lead of the night. Brandon Woods hit a three-pointer for Humboldt State, but there was no momentum to be found as Lyons hit one of his own with a goaltending call on Arizona making it 30-12 with a little under ten minutes to go in the half.
Williams was able to pick up a three point play and although Tarczewski answered with a layup, Williams hit two consecutive three-pointers to bring Humboldt State within 32-21 with 7:52 left in the first half. Williams scored yet again out of a timeout and the lead was in single digits for the first time since nearly the start of the game.
Deaundray Robinson kept that momentum going with two free throws and Hill was finally able to end the run with a three-point play that made it 35-25 with 6:05 left in the first half. Robinson scored another two, but Hill came back and nailed a three-pointer to extend the lead to 38-27. Kale hit a jumper from the free-throw line for the Lumberjacks, and the teams then exchanged threes.
After a free-throw by the Lumberjacks, Johnson hit a three to put the Wildcats up 11 with about three minutes left in the first half. Robinson hit a three of his own shortly after and Angelo Chol got an offensive rebound with about 35 seconds left in the half to bring Arizona's lead to 46-35 at the end of the first half.
Arizona came into the second half feeding Tarczewski, as he scored on two straight hook shots out of the post. However, Williams kept up his hot streak by scoring a bucket and Woods made a free-throw to come within 50-38 with 17:39 left. Arizona got a three-pointer from both Lyons and Johnson and although Williams scored again, a Tarczewski basket made it 58-42 with 15:09 left.
The teams basically exchanged baskets for the next few minutes before a three-pointer by Mayes helped Arizona to a 65-47 lead with a little under 12 minutes left.
A Parrom free-throw brought the lead to 18, but Robinson hit a three to bring it back down to 68-52 with about 11 minutes left in the second half.
A jumper by Ashley and two free throws by Tarczewski extended Arizona's lead to 20 before a Johnson bucket made it a 22-point lead and a two baskets by Jerrett extended it once again as Arizona led 78-52 with 7:36 left.
The teams exchanged a few baskets before Hill made two free throws to give Arizona the 85-57 lead with 5:59 left in the second half and basically end the game.
