Allen enjoys New Mexico Bowl

Arizona commit Calvin Allen was able to go to the New Mexico Bowl. Read on for his thoughts on the game, his future at Arizona, and more.

The Arizona Wildcat football coaching staff is looking for many of the players in the incoming recruiting class to make an immediate impact next season.

One of the players the staff hopes can play early is La Cueva (NM) pass rusher Calvin Allen. Allen has been committed for months and was impressed by Arizona's play in the New Mexico Bowl.

"I was at the New Mexico bowl and it was a good time," Allen said. "It's kind of funny it was in my home state, and when I found out it was here I was going to take advantage of it."

Allen was impressed with the fact that the Wildcats were able to stage a comeback.

"The game started out poorly, but they never gave up," he said. Going into the half I was feeling a little better, but I got concerned when we were down a couple scores. It all worked out in the end, though."

Allen will start football training in a few months.

"I'm playing basketball right now," Allen said. "I'm one of the bigger players so I play center. It is fun because it keeps me in good shape, which is a little different than football shape, but still beneficial."

Once basketball is over, Allen will begin to focus on getting into better shape before arriving at Arizona.

"I'm going to hit the weights really hard after the season," Allen said. "I've gotten stronger, but I'm not anywhere close to where I need to be.

"I'm heading to Tucson early this summer and I'm just going to hit the ground running to get ready for practice."

However, Allen is thinking about more than just football.

"Besides football, I'm also looking at the academic aspects of the school," Allen said. "I want to major in business, so I'm hopeful everything will work out with that."
