The Wildcats used a complete team effort to defeat Arizona State 71-54 Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena.
Solomon Hill got on the board first with a dunk and Evan Gordon answered followed by two free-throws by Jahii Carson. Nick Johnson and Hill then scored consecutive baskets before Jordan Bachynski made one of two free-throws. After a basket by Mark Lyons, Jonathan Gilling and Jahii Carson scored before a three-pointer by Nick Johnson gave Arizona the 11-9 lead with 15:33 left in the first half.
Gordon got the lead back with a three of his own, but Lyons matched it shortly after. Carson was then able to get in the lane and score to tie the game at 14 with 11:49 left. Carrick Felix picked up a technical foul and Johnson made one of two free-throws to give the Wildcats the one-point lead. Brandon Ashley proceeded to score in the paint to increase the lead to three before Ruslan Pateev scored a basket of his own. Carson added two free-throws and Gordon scored to force an Arizona timeout with the Sun Devils leading 20-17 with 9:11 left.
Tarczewski picked up a foul out of the timeout and made one of two from the line before Lyons was able to get into the lane and tie the game at 20. Johnson gave Arizona the lead with a three, but Carson was able to get in the lane and score to make it a one-point game with 3:59 left in the first half. Tarczewski and Hill scored before Lyons added two free-throws to give Arizona the 29-22 lead with 1:37 left.
Carson stopped the run by making two free-throws and a Gordon steal and basket as the half expired cut Arizona's lead to 29-26 at the half.
Johnson started the half with a layup, but Carson was able to get the same result. Tarczewski then made two free-throws, but Pateev made two of his own as well to make it 33-30 in favor of Arizona. The next time down court, Johnson got into the lane for a layup and a turnover led to another to put the Wildcats up seven.
Felix was then able to score his first points of the game on a three, but Lyons made one of his own the next time down court. Hill was able to make a basket out of the media timeout, but Bachynski scored off a dunk to keep the Arizona lead at seven. Hill made a similar shot shortly after, but Carson hit a floater in the lane with a little over 11 minutes left in the second half.
Jonathan Gilling scored his first point off a three out of a timeout and Felix added two free-throws to cut Arizona's lead to 44-42. Johnson got to the line the next time down court and made both of his attempts, but Carson scored off a back screen to keep the UA lead at two. Lyons was able to then draw Carson's fourth foul and made both of his free-throws to give Arizona the 48-44 lead with 9:50 left.
A three-pointer by Hill extended the lead to seven and a layup by Parrom made it a nine-point game with about six minutes left. A layup by Johnson gave Arizona the 11-point lead and forced ASU to call timeout with 7:40 left.
Out of a timeout, Lyons got into the lane for a basket, but Gordon came back with a three. Parrom then made a layup and Gilling hit his own three-pointer in response. A layup by Lyons put Arizona's lead at 11 and Parrom got to the line, making both of his attempts to make it a 13-point game with four minutes left.
Carson made two free-throws out of a timeout, but Lyons came right back with a layup. The next time down court, Carson got two off a goaltending call, but Lyons made a layup of his own to give Arizona the 13-point lead with 2:08 left and wrap up the game.
