Arizona cruises into third round

Arizona defeated Belmont 81-64 on Thursday. Read on for a complete recap of the win.

Arizona jumped out to a quick lead and never relented, as the Wildcats defeated Belmont 81-64 Thursday in Salt Lake City.

Kaleb Tarczewski got Arizona on the board with two free-throws and Nick Johnson followed with a bucket. Ian Clark answered with a score, but Solomon Hill hit a three from the corner. However, he picked up a technical that allowed J.J. Mann to pick up two free-throws before a Tarczewski score gave Arizona the 9-4 lead with a little over 15 minutes left in the first half.

Brandon Ashley scored his first points of the game and soon after a Jordin Mayes three-pointer extended Arizona's lead to 14-4 with 11:57 left in the first half. A three-pointer by Kerron Johnson cut the lead to seven before a Blake Jenkins dunk forced Sean Miller to call timeout with a little over 10 minutes left in the half.

Clark scored coming out of the timeout, but Tarczewski answered with a dunk. Clark then hit a three-pointer and Belmont was within 16-14 with 7:54 left in the first half. Mark Lyons made two free-throws and hit a three soon after, but Clark scored consecutive buckets. Two free-throws by Lyons gave Arizona a 23-18 lead with 4:16 left in the half.

After a Reece Chamberlain made a free-throw, Nick Johnson made a three and Lyons hit a layup. Kerron Johnson and Kevin Parrom exchanged free-throws before Ashley scored and Parrom's free-throw before the half put up Arizona 31-20.

Lyons hit a three-pointer and was followed by a two from Nick Johnson. After a three by Mann, Tarczewski scored and a Jerrett dunk on an offensive rebound forced Belmont to call timeout with the Wildcats up 41-23 early in the second. After a three-pointer by Mann, Lyons scored and Arizona kept a 43-26 lead with a little over 15 minutes left.

After a Lyons basket, Kerron Johnson scored consecutive hoops. Parrom answered with a three-point play and two free-throws from Nick Johnson extended the lead to 50-32. After two free-throws by Noack, a Clark three-pointer tried to get Belmont going. However, Lyons came back with a three of his own and Arizona led 53-36 with just under 12 minutes left.

Ashley added a basket in the post, but Jenkins answered with two free-throws. Kerron Johnson added two more, but Parrom hit a three and Tarczewski scored on an offensive rebound. After a Kerron Johnson three, a Lyons layup put Arizona up 62-43 with under eight minutes left.

Parrom proceeded to make two free-throws before Jenkins made a layup. Kerron Johnson scored and Clark and Mann made consecutive three-pointers to cut Arizona's lead to 64-53 with 5:27 left. Parrom ended the run with a layup down the middle of the lane, but Kerron Johnson made one of two free-throws to get one back.

Hill then added a three-pointer the next time down court, but Mann hit a two the next trip down. Tarczewski proceeded to score for Arizona and once again, Kerron Johnson answered at the free-throw line. Jerrett and Nick Johnson added baskets and after two of three free-throws by Clark, a Hill three-pointer sealed the game and put Arizona up 18.
