Staff Predictions: Week One

Arizona opens the season at home against NAU. Read on to see how WildcatAuthority.com thinks the game will play out.

Scott Coleman: Year two of the Rich Rodriguez era opens with a veteran group of Lumberjacks coming to Arizona Stadium on Friday night. While NAU has a bit of experience on both sides of the ball and features a couple of talented playmakers -- most notably running back Zach Bauman -- I just can't see them holding up in the Tucson heat for much longer than the first half. Arizona survives a bit of shaky quarterback play early, but picks up the win.

Arizona 31, NAU 14

Michael Luke: Much has been made about the myriad of defensive front concerns facing the Wildcat football team, and while NAU returns some solid players from a high-powered offense, the quarterback situation is still unsettled, which should be a major benefit for an Arizona team deep in secondary talent. Offensively, look for Rich Rod to rely heavily on the running game while putting Denker in low-risk passing situations.

Cody Martin: Even though the Lumberjacks have one of the top running backs in the FCS, it won't be enough to compete with Arizona. The Wildcats have question marks at quarterback, but also have too many weapons to be slowed down offensively, especially with NAU's much smaller defensive line.

It's going to be a night for running and Arizona will do just that. We will also likely see two or three quarterbacks from Arizona and the Wildcats will have plenty of back-ups in during the second half.

Arizona 42, NAU 13

Jason Scheer: I don't really care about qhat the quarterback situation is, there's no reason this game should be close. Ka'Deem Carey could be suspended, which may change some things offensively, but Daniel Jenkins and Jared Baker should be good enough to win with. This is not B.J. Denker's first time running the offense, so there really should not be a slow start as he gets comfortable.

Any time you have a mobile quarterback, things can be a little scary defensively. However, NAU is also asking Kyren Poe to go on the road and be the quarterback against a solid team. That is certainly not an easy task.
