Brandon Roy sets in-home visits

Brandon Roy had knee surgery Aug. 9, but is already back in the gym shooting. He's also scheduled two in-home visits and might take an unofficial visit in the near future.

I spoke with Jeane Roy, Brandon Roy's mother, this evening. Brandon was visiting his grandmother so his mother brought me up to date on the recruiting process. Roy had surgery to repair legament damage to left knee on Aug. 9, but it hasn't stopped the self-described gym rat from putting in his time at the gym. With his high school team preparing to start practice in two weeks, Roy wants to be ready. "The doctors told him it would take a couple of weeks before he would be ready to do anything," his mother said. "But Brandon was in the gym shooting today. He said (his knee) really hurt but he's not running on it and the doctors said he could shoot. They also told him to expect it hurt. And it does." Roy also had to do some rehab in the classroom this summer. He took two classes over to improve his core GPA and passed both with better grades. Now all he has to do is post a qualifying test score. Roy has not yet taken the SAT or the ACT and that poses another problem. Until Roy posts a test score (it need not be a qualifying score) he's prohibited by NCAA rules from taking official campus visits. His mother said he might take unofficial visits to Gonzaga and the University of Washington, but other more distant trip would have to wait. "Brandon will take the ACT in September and the SAT in October," his mother said. "When he gets his score he take some of his (official) visits." Roy has narrowed his choice of schools, somewhat. "We have (in-home) visits with Boston College and Washington State," she said. "Both schools will be here September 9." Roy is considering Washington, Arizona, Gonzaga, Washington State and Boston College. "Boston College is a long way from home," Roy's mother said. "But the coaches have been so nice, we just don't want to eliminate anyone yet."
