Arizona controls San Diego State on the road

Arizona defeated San Diego State 69-60 Thursday night on the road. Read on for a complete recap of the win.

Arizona knew going on the road and beating San Diego State would not be easy, but controlled the game from the tip and defeated the Aztecs 69-60 Thursday night.

Aaron Gordon got the scoring going for Arizona, but Xavier Thames matched it with two free-throws. Nick Johnson proceeded to hit a three and Kaleb Tarczewski followed with his first points of the game. After a J.J. O'Brien bucket, Gordon hit a three-pointer. Winston Shepard matched it with a three of his own and Johnson and O'Brien then exchanged hoops. A Gordon basket led both teams into the timeout with Arizona leading 14-9 with under 13 minutes to go in the first half.

O'Brien and Rondae Jefferson exchanged two points as both teams went into another time out with Arizona up 16-11 with 11:11 left.

Gordon and Hollis-Jefferson scored out of the timeout before Gordon hit another three and Hollis-Jefferson hit a free-throw. However, Gordon went to the bench with his second foul and Shepard took advantage with two straight hoops to cut the Arizona lead to 24-15 with 6:25 left in the first half.

Shepard made a free-throw out of a timeout and Hollis-Jefferson made two. After a basket by O'Brien, Ashley made two free-throws and Thames followed with a jumper. Matt Shrigley then made two free-throws and Johnson responded with a bucket before Johnson added one of two free-throws. Two free-throws by Thames cut the Arizona lead to 31-23 with three minutes left in the half.

T.J. McConnell and Dakarai Allen exchanged hoops, but a basket by Johnson and Gabe York forced a timeout with Arizona leading 37-25 and under two minutes left in the half. Soon after, York made two free-throws, but a Shrigley three made the score 39-28 at the half in favor of the Wildcats.

Ashley scored the first points of the half and O'Brien matched before Ashley scored again. After a free-throw by O'Brien, Tarczewski and Josh Davis exchanged baskets to keep Arizona's lead at 45-33 with about 16 minutes left in the half.

Thames made a two and O'Brien added two free-throws. Johnson and O'Brien then exchanged one from the line, but two straight baskets from Johnson forced a timeout from SDSU with the Wildcats up 5-38 with just under 12 minutes left in regulation.

After two free-throws by Thames, Johnson and Gordon followed with buckets. Shepard scored and was matched by Tarczewski before Shepard got two at the line. After a shot by O'Brien, Thames made a three to cut the Arizona lead to seven. McConnell then got a hoop and two free-throws to put the Wildcats up 60-49 with about five minutes left in regulation.

After a free-throw by Allen, a three-pointer by Thames brought it back to three and Arizona called timeout with 4:05 left.

O'Brien made a free-throw out of the timeout to bring the Aztecs to within six, but Johnson came down and got to the rim for his 19th point. Johnson then fouled Thames on a three and he made two of the attempts to come within six again with 2:41 left.

After a Thames bucket, Gordon was able to get a lob off an inbounds pass and a McConnell free-throw brought the lead to seven before two free-throws by O'Brien put the Aztecs to within 65-60 with about 40 seconds left. Two free-throws by Johnson seconds later would be enough for the Wildcats.
