Johnson wants to play with the best

Stanley Johnson has consistently said that he wants to play for a winner in college. Read on to see why he felt Arizona would give him that opportunity and more.

It is no secret that Sean Miller has dominated California recruiting for the past few years, but you can make an argument that Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei wing Stanley Johnson is just as important as any.

Where Johnson was a kid that in the past would have likely been prepackaged to UCLA, he sensed a turn of the tide and wanted to be part of a budding out of state dynasty.

"Honestly, besides Sean Miller, the reason I wanted to get to Arizona was to play with the best players," Johnson said. "Arizona is where all the California kids are going. These aren't just good players, these are great players.

"I mean who else can get Aaron Gordon, Brandon Ashley and guys like that. Granted both those guys are leaving, but there are plenty of other good players."

While playing with elite players was an important factor in Johnson's decision, it was also important to play with a true point guard.

"You look at next year, you're going to have T.J. running the show and he just makes it better for everyone," Johnson said.

In addition to McConnell, there is another point guard that Johnson is really enthused to play with.

"I've been close with Parker Jackson-Cartwright since elementary and whenever you play with the guy he just makes you look good," Johnson said. "We'll probably room together, which should be a blast."

Johnson also admits that he is likely to be more comfortable knowing that Arizona is strongly built for the near future.

"I'm just going to a good situation, because there aren't any other teams on the West Coast that have the kind of opportunities that I am going to have in the next couple years," Johnson said.
