Fast start paces Arizona to victory

Arizona opened a quick lead and never relented as it defeated Colorado on Thursday night. Read on for a recap of the Wildcats' 69-57 win.

Arizona opened up a quick lead and never looked back as it defeated Colorado 69-57 Thursday night at McKale.

Brandon Ashley started the game with a three and Kaleb Tarczewski followed with a score. Ashley and Nick Johnson proceeded to score consecutive hoops and Colorado took a timeout down 9-0 less than four minutes into the game.

Josh Scott made two free-throws, but Ashley and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson followed with buckets. After a score by Askia Booker, Gordon got a dunk and Gabe York hit a three to put the Wildcats up 18-4 with 11:54 left in the first half.

Xavier Johnson scored and Nick Johnson answered quickly. Scott then came up with a three-point play and a basket by Dustin Thomas forced an Arizona timeout with the score cut to 20-14. However, Arizona got a bucket by Gordon and Jordin Mayes to go back up 24-14 with 7:31 left in the half.

Nick Johnson made a free-throw as Scott answered with a two. Ashley then scored and York hit a three, as a shot by Nick Johnson gave the Wildcats the 32-16 lead with 3:23 remaining.

Xavier Talton got two at the line and Thomas added a basket. Nick Johnson and Scott then exchanged hoops before Nick picked up a three-point play. Xavier Johnson and Hollis-Jefferson then exchanged hoops to end the half with Arizona up 39-24.

Booker started the half with a layup, but Tarczewski scored soon after. Xavier Johnson hit a three and Nick Johnson and Ashley scored consecutive hoops. After a basket by Hopkins, Gordon scored four straight points and Colorado called timeout down 49-31 with 16:21 left.

Gordon scored, but Scott was able to get a three-point play. Xavier Johnson then made three free-throws and hit a basket. McConnell followed with a hoop and Tarczewski made one of two free-throws. After two free-throws by Booker, Tarczewski and York scored consecutive baskets.

Booker and Scott then did the same before Talton and Ashley exchanged scores as well to make it 60-44 in favor of Arizona with 7:19 left in regulation.

Gordon scored on a layup as Booker made one of two from the line. Ashley then made two free-throws before an Xavier Johnson three and layup cut the Arizona lead to 64-50 with about four minutes left.

However, Nick Johnson came back and scored a bucket as Arizona went up 16 and played out the next three minutes as the previous 37.
