Offense struggles on loss

Arizona lost to Arizona State 69-66 in double overtime on Saturday. Read on for the complete recap of the loss.

Arizona's defense could not bail out its offense, as the offensive struggles continued and the Wildcats lost to Arizona State 69-66 in double overtime Saturday night on the road.

Jordan Bachynski scored the first points of the game, but T.J. McConnell made a three. Bachynski then went one of two from the free-throw line, as Rondae Jefferson drew a goal-tending call to put Arizona up. Jermaine Marshall and Jahii Carson then scored consecutive hoops to go up 6-5 with 11:43 left in the first half.

Marshall and Gordon exchanged buckets before Gordon answered a Marshall free-throw with a jumper. Bo Barnes then hit a three, but Kaleb Tarczewski made two straight hoops to put the Wildcats up 13-12 with 7:02 left in the half.

After a Marshall basket, Nick Johnson made a three. He then hit two free-throws and Tarczewski made a jumper that forced a timeout with Arizona up 20-14. Marshall responded with a three and then exchanged jumpers with Johnson as Arizona's lead remained at three.

McConnell was able to get into the paint and make a layup, but Bachynski was fouled soon after and made both free-throws. Johnson then made a layup with a few seconds left in the half, as the Wildcats led 26-21 at halftime.

Shaquielle McKissic scored to start the second half, as Hollis-Jefferson came right back with a layup. McKissic and Marshall then hit back-to-back threes to force Sean Miller to call timeout down 29-28 a few minutes into the half.

Johnson made a bucket out of the timeout, as Bachynski scored on the next trip. McConnell then hit a three and a dunk by Johnson caused Herb Sendek to call timeout with the Sun Devils down 35-31 with 14:03 left in the half.

Marshall and Tarczewski made one free-throw each before Marshall got a three-point play. After a basket by Hollis-Jefferson, Barnes made two free-throws. Gordon then made one, but Bachynski and Hollis-Jefferson exchanged a pair each. Carson proceeded to score and hit two free-throws to put ASU up 4 with just under eight minutes to go.

Carson made an acrobatic shot to go up six, as a McConnell three cut the Sun Devils' lead in half. Johnson and Hollis-Jefferson made one free-throw each to come within 47-46. One free-throw by Carson extended the lead to two and a jumper put the Sun Devils up four with under three minutes left.

Bachynski was fouled and made one of two free-throws as ASU went up 51-46 with 2:38 left in regulation. Gordon then completed a three-point play and a layup by McConnell off a turnover tied the game at 51 with 49 seconds left, as the game wound up in overtime.

McConnell started the overtime with a jumper, but Bachynski got a three-point play the next time down court to go up one. After two missed free-throws by Johnson, a layup by Carson put the Sun Devils up three. Tarczewski proceeded to make two free-throws to cut the lead to one and got fouled again, as he made both to take the one-point lead with 2:24 left.

Bachynski got to the line the next trip down court and made one of two to tie it at 57 with about two minutes left. Johnson missed a shot with a few seconds remaining and Carson's attempt at the buzzer missed.

Carson scored to start the second overtime and McConnell tied it with a layup. Gordon then hit a layup to put the Wildcats up two with about 2:30 left and then made another to go up four. Marshall made his first shot in a while as a three-pointer cut the Arizona lead to one with a little over a minute left.

Tarczewski made two free-throws to extend the lead to three, but Marshall tied it on the next trip down court. Gordon got to the line and made one of two with about 35 seconds left, as ASU took possession down one. Marshall made a shot to go up one with 14 seconds left and Bachynski came up with a block for the win.
