Arizona is Elite

Arizona defeated San Diego State 70-64 on Thursday night to advance to the Elite Eight. Read on for a complete recap of the win.




No matter how you want to describe it, Arizona's 70-64 win over San Diego State on Thursday was impressive.

Josh Davis scored the first bucket of the game off a rebound, as T.J. McConnell found the hoop. Davis then scored on the glass again and two free-throws from Rondae Jefferson tied the game at four with 15:48 remaining in the half.

Aaron Gordon got on the board, but Winston Shepard matched. Hollis-Jefferson made a free-throw and Dwayne Polee answered with a layup and a three. Gordon then scored again and after a bucket by Xavier Thames, Elliott Pitts hit a three from the corner. Hollis-Jefferson then proceeded to make two from the line to give the Wildcats a 14-13 lead with 11:52 left in the half.

Skylar Spencer made two free-throws and Thames followed with a basket before McConnell made a three. J.J. O'Brien then made one from the line and Gordon responded with a basket. Davis made two free-throws, but Gordon made a three that was answered by a three-point play from Thames as SDSU took a 23-22 lead with 7:31 remaining in the half.

Shepard was able to score and then Polee got a dunk off a turnover to force Arizona to call timeout down five, Out of the timeout, Shepard and Hollis-Jefferson exchanged buckets to keep the Aztecs' lead at 29-24 with 3:57 left in the first half.

Polee hit a three to extend the lead to eight, but Gordon responded with a dunk. McConnell then cut the lead to four with a layup going into the half.

Thames scored to start the half and Kaleb Tarczewski finally got on the board. Thames got to the line and made both, but McConnell came back and scored. Shepard and Thames then scored again, as a basket by Hollis-Jefferson cut the lead to 40-34 five minutes into the half.

Hollis-Jefferson and Gordon proceeded to both get dunks and SDSU took timeout with the Wildcats within 40-38. Out of the timeout, Thames made a jumper and Hollis-Jefferson made two from the line as the Aztecs still led by two with 11:20 remaining.

Shepard and Tarczewski exchanged a pair of free-throws each before Shepard got to the line and made one more. Gabe York then hit a three, but Thames answered with a bucket. Tarczewski and O'Brien exchanged hoops and Hollis-Jefferson and McConnell scored to give Arizona its first lead of the game since 2-0.

O'Brien made one from the line, but Gordon scored on a tip-in. Spencer then made a free-throw, as Tarczewski and Nick Johnson scored to put Arizona up 56-51 with 2:23 left in regulation.

O'Brien got fouled and made two out of the timeout, but a three from Johnson gave Arizona the 59-53 lead. He then got to the line and made both to extend the lead to eight with 1:30 left. Polee proceeded to make a three from the corner to cut the lead to five with 1:13 remaining in regulation.

Johnson would get to the line and make both attempts, but Thames came back and made a three-pointer. SDSU fouled Johnson yet again and he made both to keep the lead at 66-59 with 49 seconds left.

Thames got into the paint and scored to cut the lead to four, but Johnson got two more free-throws. Gordon fouled Thames on a three and he made all of them, as Arizona's lead went to 67-64 with 19 seconds left.

York was fouled with ten seconds left and made one of two to extend the lead to four. SDSU could not convert and Johnson went to the line with 2.8, made both and sealed the victory.
