Riley one of 2017's best
One of the top prospects nationally in 2017 is 6-foot-7, 215-pound Chatsworth (Calif.) Sierra Canyon power forward Cody Riley. A physical forward who can take defenders inside and score, face up and attack the basket or hit jumpers, Riley is a strong kid who also plays very hard and rebounds well. His freshman season was a success, according to Sierra Canyon head coach Ty Nichols. "Cody played extremely well," Nichols said. "I think he's one of the top few kids in the class. He's developing really nicely as far as adding additional packages to his game. He has a jumper out to 21 feet, he's starting to put the ball on the ground better and he's starting to guard the perimeter more. "We're really trying to train him to be a kid who can post up, hit the midrange shot and shoot the jumper off the dribble. I think he has the talent to do that, he made really big steps doing that this year and I think you'll see more of it." Something that makes Nichols feel confident about Riley's future is his attitude and approach to the game. "He never takes days off, he has a great work ethic and unbelievable attitude towards being coached," said Nichols. "I think whatever college gets him at the next level will really enjoy coaching Cody because he listens and takes it in. "The ability to be coached and get better is rare with all the stuff going on around these kids but Cody, like his teammates, is a humble kid and just wants to get better." It's very early into Riley's recruitment, but five schools have shown him the most attention. "USC was the first one in, UConn has offered, Kansas has offered, Arizona has offered and is interested and UCLA is in the same boat," said Nichols. "Those schools have shown a lot of interest." While it may help that those schools have jumped on Riley early, he's far away from doing much with his recruitment. "It's just way too early," Nichols said. "You can even look at Kevin Ollie possibly taking an NBA job. It didn't happen, but with Cody being in the 2017 class, there's going to be a lot of changes between now and when he's going to make a decision." Even though there's a long way to go in Riley's recruiting process, the coaches that get to know him now may have an advantage. "I think it's going to come down to the relationship he has with some of these coaches," said Nichols. "That's going to be really important to him."
