The one-time USC commit had been on the national radar for quite some time and he also possessed an incredibly rare frame and body type that indicated elite potential.
With all the coaching upheaval that hovered around USC last season, Poland decided it was time to re-open his recruitment and the rest is history.
"When I started looking around again Arizona was on me quickly," Poland said. "There were a lot of schools that showed interest, but Arizona was the school that went out of its way to let me know it wanted me there."
In the months after his commitment, Poland didn't have any second thoughts about his decision.
"Once I pulled the trigger I was in," he said. "I found the school that I wanted, the coaching staff I wanted and the fact that it is on the West Coast and I can compete against guys I grew up playing against will be a lot of fun.
"Most importantly, I just felt like one of the guys. The whole situation was natural."
Poland will be arriving at Arizona with an eye toward early playing time.
"I think my size and arms are a big advantage for me," Poland said. "There just aren't a lot of guys as big as me.
"I've put on a lot of strength in the past year and I'm working hard in that area because I'm taller and I have the frame to put on even more weight."
