With football season around the corner, we are going to look at the impact of several players. For starters, there are numerous players that have the potential to be a breakout star for Arizona. Usually that title would go to a position player, but we are going to go a different route here and pick a lineman.
Jacob Alsadek came to Arizona with high expectations and it appears that a redshirt season has done him well, as the coaching staff is extremely high on him and he is in a position to compete for a starting job.
Alsadek has been preparing for this moment since he committed to Arizona and has continued to prepare for the past year or so.
"I do the lifting and conditioning from the Arizona workout book and then I add my own agility drills at the end," Alsadek said. "The extra conditioning is going to help me because it is not as hot here as it is there. I'm striving to work out harder and get in good shape."
It has indeed helped, as offensive line coach Jim Michalczik believes that Alsadek was one of the more impressive linemen during the spring.
"Jacob is an extremely hard worker," Michalczik said. "He is a very competitive young man, dedicated, tough, always wanting to do the extra things, and it is paying off for him. I don't ever want to say starters because we don't know who the starters are until the first game, but he is running with the ones a bunch and he's earned everything he's gotten.
"Every day is a competition to come out on this field, and he's got that competitive nature and that drive to be successful."
There is a good chance that Alsadek will step right into the right guard position that was vacated when Chris Putton graduated. In addition, he has the ability to play both tackle spots and do so effectively.
We realize that players like Davonte Neal and Cayleb Jones are going to get the most attention on offense and rightfully so, but Alsadek is a player that is quietly going to do his job and do it very well.
If all goes as expected, Alsadek should wind up being an anchor on the line until he graduates and thus we believe he will be a major breakout player this season.
