Solomon staying humble

Anu Solomon was named starter on Monday. Read on for his reaction and more.

On Monday, Anu Solomon was named the starter for Friday's season opener against UNLV.

The redshirt freshman quarterback is approaching practice like business as usual.

"I felt normal," Solomon said. "It was a normal day. Obviously it has not sunk in yet. I still have to get better and I have three good guys who want the job and I have to keep working."

It was somewhat of a surprise that Rich Rodriguez announced the starter on Monday and Solomon was not sure when he would do it.

"I was just as clueless as anyone else," he said. "I thought, maybe he will just tweet it two hours before the game. We just all have to be ready.

"It feels good to be named the starter. Hopefully I am not as rusty as I was in the spring game, but I just have to keep getting better."

As calm as Solomon is, he admits that it will be difficult to avoid nerves on Friday.

"I will be nervous It is my first college game," he said. "I need to fight the butterflies and do what I do. When you play nervous, you aren’t playing as yourself and you start doing things you normally don’t do, so you have to be calm and be smooth with the process."

There have been plenty of ticket request from Solomon considering that he is playing his hometown school.

"I know three or four guys on the team and I keep in touch with them here and there," Solomon said. "There’s three guys that went to Bishop Gorman and we are pretty close.

"UNLV was one of my top five schools. It was pretty cool going there last year as well. Polynesians run deep. I might need everybody’s tickets for Friday."
