Much was made of the cold weather in Salt Lake City on Saturday, but in the end it was Arizona's hot running game and defense that made the difference in a 42-10 win.
Terris Jones-Grigsby then ran for eight yards and Tyrell Johnson had a nine-yard completion. After a false start, Jones-Grigsby ran for two yards and then five more.
Solomon picked up a first down with a nine-yard run and Jones-Grigsby followed with an eight yard gain. Two plays later, Austin Hill got the first down with a five-yard reception.
Arizona found itself in third and short, but could not get it. The Wildcats settled for a 39-yard field goal that went wide, as the score held at 0-0.
Utah went three and out and Arizona took the ball on its own 14. On second down, Wilson ran for 17 yards and then followed it up with runs of eight and three yards.
Solomon was sacked for a loss of four, but found Hill for 51 yards. Solomon then scored on the ground from 11 yards out and the extra point gave the Wildcats a 7-0 lead with 3:23 left in the first quarter.
Utah went for another three and out and the Wildcats took the ball on their own 20. On second down, Solomon found Grant for 12 yards. Nick Wilson ran for 11, but a personal foul on Cayeb Jones basically ended the drive.
Fortunately for Arizona, the Utes had yet another three and out, giving the Wildcats the ball on their own 11.
On second down, Wilson gained 33 yards on the ground, but the Wildcats got nothing more and punted to Utah’s 25.
Travis Wilson had a 33-yard run that got 15 more yards on a personal foul by Arizona. A few plays later, Wilson threw an interception in the end zone to Jourdon Grandon and Arizona took over on its own 20.
Once again, the Wildcats could not get anything going. Jones-Grigsby ran for five yards and Solomon ran for six more. However, a two-yard run and two incomplete passes ended the drive and gave the Utes the ball on their own 20.
After another three and out for the Utes, Arizona started on its own 27 with a seven-yard run from Wilson.
Solomon then found Trey Griffey for 49 yards and Wilson ran it in from 17 yards out two plays later as the extra point put the Wildcats up 14-0 with 4:12 left in the first half.
Booker gained two yards on his first carry and Travis Wilson found Westlee Tonga for seven yards.
The Utes were called for holding two plays later and Kenneth Scott then caught a seven-yard pass.
On the next play, Tra’Mayne Bondurant force a fumble and Dan Pettinato scored from 31 yards out as the extra point gave the Wildcats a 21-0 lead with 1:17 left in the first half.
The Utes took possession on their own 25 with a 13-yard pass to Clay. Two plays later, Scott caught a 12-yard pass. He then caught a 10-yard pass three plays after that and Clay followed with 16 yards.
Jarvis McCall was called for a hands to the face penalty and Travis Wilson found Tonga for an 11-yard touchdown with the extra point cutting the Arizona lead to 21-7 at the half.
Utah got the ball on its own 25 and on second down, Booker ran for six yards. He then ran for four yards on two consecutive carries and Tonga caught a seven-yard pass two plays later. A holding call and a sack then ended the drive and forced the Utes to punt.
Arizona got the ball on its own 16. Jesse Scroggins came in at quarterback due to an ankle injury to Solomon and on second down, he ran for 18 yards.
Two plays later, Solomon ht Grant for ten yards and followed it up with a 43-yard pass. Scroggins then fumbled the next two plays and Utah recovered the second fumble.
The Utes took over on their 14 with a six-yard run from Booker and he then ran for five and two yards before gaining 56 more.
The drive proceeded to stall and Utah settled for a 28-yard field goal that cut the Wildcats’ lead to 21-10 with 5:14 left in the third.
Arizona got one first down on its next drive, but had to punt, giving Utah possession on its own seven.
Clay caught a five-yard pass to start the drive and Booker gained seven on the ground. Tonga then caught a 25-yard pass and Wilson ran for three.
After an incomplete pass, Wilson gained the first down with an eight-yard run. Book then gained a combined seven yards on two carries to end the third quarter.
The first play of the fourth quarter was a fumbled snap by Wilson and Arizona took over on its own five.
Wilson’s first and second carry went for six yards and then he picked up five and three more. On the next play, he ran it in from 75 yards out with the extra point giving the Wildcats a 28-10 lead with 11:50 left.
The Utes took over on their own 35 and on third down, Wilson’s pass was tipped and Jared Tevis intercepted it.
On the next play, Wilson scored from 19 yards out and the extra point gave the Wildcats a 35-10 lead with 10:40 left.
Utah took the ball on its own 25 with two incomplete passes. Scott then got an 11-yard pass and two plays later, Bondurant got a pick six as the extra point gave the Wildcats a 42-10 lead with 9:58 left.
