Utah Valley never stood a chance and Arizona easily defeated the Wolverines 87-56 Tuesday night at McKale.
T.J. McConnell put Arizona on the board and Marcel Davis quickly answered. Stanley Johnson then scored before Chad Ross hit a three. Darrious Hamilton made a bucket and McConnell scored his second of the game before two free-throws by Brandon Ashley gave the Wildcats an 8-7 lead with 15:54 left in the half.
Mitch Bruneel made his first basket of the game and Rondae Jefferson made a free-throw. Hamilton then scored and Dusan Ristic responded quickly. After Zach Nelson got a bucket, Elliott Pitts made a three-pointer.
Jaden Jackson then made a three of his own and Ristic went one of two from the line. Hollis-Jefferson scored and made two free-throws before a three-point play by Johnson gave Arizona a 22-16 lead with 12:24 left in the first half.
Parker Jackson-Cartwright scored his first points on a layup and then got a steal at midcoast for his second bucket of the game. Bruneel then scored to cut Arizona’s lead to 26-18 with under ten minutes remaining in the half.
Ashley made a three and Williams hit two free-throws. Tarczewski and Davis then did the same and after a free-throw by Johnson, Ross hit a jumper. Tarczewski scored on a dunk before Pitts made one from the line. Rustic then scored and Davis made two free-throws as Arizona led 37-26 with 3:48 left in the half.
Hollis-Jefferson score and David made two free-throws before Pitts nailed a three to give Arizona a 42-28 lead at the half.
Gabe York started the half with his first basket and Davis responded with one. Johnson then made a three and York did as well before a dunk by York put the Wildcats up 52-30 with 16:37 left.
Ashley and McConnell scored and Hollis-Jefferson made a free-throw. York then made a three and Ristic scored before Nelson’s three brought Arizona’s lead to 62-33.
York made a free-throw and Ristic scored before a free-throw by Jackson-Cartwright. Sean Miller and Brandon Ashley then received technical fouls and Williams proceeded to make six free-throws.
Hollis-Jefferson scored and Nelson made a three. Johnson then made one free-throw and a dunk before Alex Carr got one at the line. Rustic proceeded to make two free-throws to give the Wildcats a 73-43 lead with about six minutes left.
