ORLANDO, Fla. – University of Arizona sophomore linebacker Scooby Wright III was awarded the Chuck Bednarik Award, presented annually to the nation’s most outstanding defensive player by the Maxwell Football Club on Thursday.
The selection committee is made up of NCAA head college football coaches, sportswriters and sportscasters around the country and members of the Maxwell Football Club.
Wright joined fellow finalists Vic Beasley of Clemson, and Joey Bosa of Ohio State. Wright was announced the winner at the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show in Orlando, Fla. and will be presented with the official award at the Maxwell Football Club’s Award Gala at the Tropicana Casino Resort in Atlantic City on Fri., March 13, 2015. Members of the Wright family were in attendance to celebrate his award.
The sophomore was also named to the 2014 Walter Camp, USA Today and SB Nation All-America First Team on Thursday. Wright was also named the SB Nation Defensive Player of the Year. Since Monday, Wright has collected three national awards along with three First Team All-America honors.
He was awarded the Bronko Nagurski Award on Monday and won the Rotary Lombardi Award while being named a First Team All-American by CBS Sports on Wednesday. Wright was also one of the five finalists for the Walter Camp Award.
Through 13 games, Wright has 153 total tackles, 28.0 tackles for a loss, 14.0 sacks and six forced fumbles, all team highs. The Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team all-conference selection, Wright ranks in the top five among FBS players for total tackles, tackles for loss, sacks and forced fumbles.
He’s the only FBS player to rank in the top 25 of each of those categories. Further, Wright is vying to become the first player since 1999 to finish the season ranked in the top five for tackles, tackles for loss and sacks.
