Wildcats pass first road test

Arizona passed its first road test of the season with a 60-55 win over UTEP. Read on for a complete recap of the Wildcats; victory.

Arizona went on the road for the first time this season and answered the challenge, as the Wildcats defeated the UTEP Miners 60-55 on Friday night.

Brandon Ashley got Arizona on the board and Gabe York quickly added a three. T.J. McConnell then scored before Vince Hunter did the same. A three by Brandon Ashley then forced a timeout with Arizona up 10-2 about four minutes into the game.

Stanley Johnson made a three and then got a dunk in transition. Julian Washburn hit a three and York responded with a bucket. Hunter scored and York made two free-throws before Hunter scored again and also made two from the line, cutting Arizona’s lead to 19-11 with a little over eight minutes left in the half.

Cedrick Land scored his first points of the game and Omega Harris did as well. Hunter proceeded to score and after a bucket by Rondae Jefferson, a shot by C.J. Cooper cut the Wildcats’ lead to 21-19.

Hunter and McConnell exchanged baskets and York and Lang did the same. Arizona then got a three from Johnson to end the half with a 28-25 lead.

Cooper scored at the start of the half and Johnson responded with a three. Ashley then scored and Washburn did the same. McConnell made a jumper before Hollis-Jefferson added a free-throw and a shot by Harris cut the Wildcats’ lead to 36-31 a few minutes into the second half.

Matt Willms scored his first points of the game and Ashley answered the next trip down court. Hunter then hit a bucket and a three by Harris tied the game at 38 with 13:34 left in regulation.

Hunter scored and Johnson, Hollis-Jefferson, and Earvin Morris all proceeded to make one of two from the line. Tarczewski then scored and went one of two from the line before hitting another bucker.

Soon after, Hunter picked up his fifth foul and Johnson made one free-throw to give the Wildcats the 46-41 lead with 7:38 left.

Johnson made two more free-throws, but Willms responded with a three-point play. Johnson then added another two free-throws and Cooper made a floater to keep the Miner within five.

McConnell hit a jumper and York got a dunk in transition, as a layup by Hollis-Jefferson put the Wildcats up ten.

Lang made three consecutive free-throws and Willms added another. McConnell then went one of two from the line, but Harris made a three.

York made two from the line and Cooper made a jumper as a free-throw from Ashley clinched the five-point victory for the Wildcats.
