Wildcats go down

Arizona lost its first game of the season 61-57 at UNLV. Read on for a complete recap of the Wildcats' loss.

Arizona struggled in nearly every aspect of the Tuesday’s game at UNLV and could not overcome it, as the Rebels defeated the Wildcats 61-57.

Gabe York started the game with a three and Christian Wood got on the board for the Rebels. After a bucket by Rashad Vaughn, Goodluck Okonoboh scored on a dunk. Kaleb Tarczewski and T.J. McConnell then got a bucket and a shot by Wood gave the Rebels an 8-7 lead a few minutes into the game.

Elliott Pitts made a there and Okonoboh made two free-throws. McConnell and Jordan Cornish then exchanged buckets as the game was tied at 12 with 11:43 left in the first half.

Stanley Johnson proceeded to make two free-throws and Brandon Ashley scored in the post. Rondae Jefferson then scored and forced a UNLV timeout with the Rebels down six.

McConnell scored and Patrick McCaw made a three. York then hit a three-pointer and McCaw scored again. Okonoboh made a free-throw and York and Vaughn exchanged threes as Arizona led 26-21 with 7:28 remaining in the half.

Ashley and McCaw exchanged baskets before Johnson made a three. Vaughn responded with a three of his own before McConnell made two free-throws. Wood then scored, as did McConnell, and Arizona’s lead stayed at 35-29.

Okonoboh made one free-throw and Johnson came back with a three-point play. Wood then made two from the line, as did Ashley. Dwayne Morgan scored his first points of the game and Vaughn followed it with a basket of his own. A free-throw by Johnson then gave Arizona a 41-36 lead at the half.

Wood began the half with two free-throws and Ashley came back down and scored. Wood and Tarczewski then exchanged baskets to keep the Wildcats’ lead at five.

Wood and Johnson both scored before Tarczewski and Wood did the same. Ashley went one of two from the line and Vaughn scored four consecutive points before a bucket by McCaw tied the game at 50 with 13:43 left in regulation.

Tarczewski made two free-throws and then hit a hook shot in the lane. He was then called for a flagrant and Cornish made both free-throws to keep the Rebels within two.

Ashley and McConnell scored consecutive buckets coming out of a timeout and UNLV was forced to call one with the Wildcats up 58-52 with 10:31 remaining.

Wood scored again and Hollis-Jefferson made one free-throw. Vaughn and York proceeded to exchanged scores as Arizona’s lead held at five.

Wood then scored two straight times and forced Miller to call timeout with the Wildcats’ lead down to one with 6:01 left.

Wood scored and Okonoboh hit a free-throw to give UNLV the lead. Vaughn then hit a tough shot and the Rebels went up 65-62 with 3:28 remaining.

Johnson made one of two free-throws and Vaughn did the same before he hit a floater to go up 68-63.

Ashley proceeded to make two free-throws and McConnell made a shot, but Johnson later missed a layup and UNLV iced the game at the free-throw line.
