York staying focused

Gabe York continues to work to stay focused. Read on to what his newest focus may be and more.

As Gabe York and his teammates continue to go through the season, their focus is clear.

"I think at the end of the day we have to focus on us," York said. "Coach Miller does a great job of telling us that and focusing on the fact that for us to do what we want to do, we have to be better, it’s not about the other team.

"When we played Oregon State we lost up there, we weren't at our best and Coach Miller knew that first hand. I think this week especially, he is focusing on what are we going to do to be at our best on Saturday afternoon."

York respects Arizona State's ability to hit the three, but believes Arizona's success still goes back to whether or not it plays its game.

"I feel like they are a great basketball team," York said. "I think the biggest thing is when they shoot the ball well they are a very good basketball team. We did a good job of holding them to a small amount of three point field goals made, so I definitely think they will be ready to go and make shots.

"The rivalry dates back way before I got here obviously, but Coach Miller is passionate about playing Arizona State. We have to go out and play basketball the way we have for the last 22 games. It is about being focused, but also having it in the back of our minds that we are playing Arizona State. We know how great of a rivalry this game is, especially when we go play over there."

With Parker Jackson-Cartwright out with a concussion, York has been backing up T.J. McConnell at the point.

"I have been running the point for team two or team three pretty much the entire year just in case something like this happened," York said. "If TJ gets in foul trouble or Parker or whatever it may be, Coach Miller wanted me to be a part of it and know all the plays just in case something happened.

"It's a little bit different just because with T.J. and Parker, it is more passing first and looking for the open man instead of looking for your shot. It is a little strange at first, but I have done it all year and I know when to change my mindset."

Should York go down or get in foul trouble Rondae Hollis-Jefferson is the next man up.

"It’s great for him and I think for the team having him be another option at the point guard position is amazing for us," York said. "He can probably dish it to some people me or T.J. can’t see over a seven footer.

"We saw it at practice yesterday and he did a great job. It was a little weird, but at the end of the day Coach Miller knows what he is doing and both T.J. and I thought it was a good idea as well."
