Wildcats upset on road

Arizona's defense failed it on Saturday as the Wildcats lost to the Arizona State Sun Devils 81-78. Read on for a complete recap of the loss.

Arizona’s defense struggled throughout Saturday’s game against Arizona State as the Wildcats lost 81-78 on the road.

Gerry Blakes scored first and Savon Goodman then scored to force a timeout. Stanley Johnson and Rondae Jefferson got a basket out of the timeout before Tra Holder got on the board. Kaleb Tarczewski and T.J. McConnell then scored to put Arizona up 8-6 at the media timeout.

Shaquielle McKissic scored and Gabe York made his first basket of the game. Holder then got a three-point play before McConnell scored.

Blakes made a step back three and York scored again. McConnell made a three, but Goodman scored the next time down court. A three by York then put the Wildcats up 20-16 with 11:40 left in the first half.

Johnson made a three and after a bucket by Blakes, Ashley hit a jumper to put Arizona up 25-18 and force an ASU timeout.

Blakes made two free-throws and Holder did the same before he hit a three. A dunk by Goodman then put the ASU run at 9-0 and Miller called timeout with the Sun Devils up 27-25 and 5:59 remaining in the first half.

McConnell scored and Eric Jacobsen made his first basket of the game. Hollis-Jefferson then got a layup to tie the game at 29.

Barnes scored five consecutive points and Jonathan Gilling made a three. Hollis-Jefferson and McKissic exchanged baskets before Johnson made a three. Willie Atwood then scored to end the half and the Sun Devils took a 41-34 lead.

Goodman scored and McConnell made a three. Goodman and Johnson then exchanged hoops before Goodman scored again. Hollis-Jefferson scored and Ashley made a free-throw before another bucket by Hollis-Jefferson.

A layup by Goodman then put the Sun Devils up 49-44 about 5 minutes into the second half.

Holder made two free-throws and Ashley scored. After one from the line from McKissic, Ashley scored again and a dunk by Johnson brought Herb Sendek to call timeout and Arizona within 52-50 with 12:44 left.

Gilling made a three and McConnell got a basket. After a score by Blakes, Hollis-Jefferson made a three-point play. Holder and Goodman added a free-throw each and Ashley made one as well to cut the ASU lead to 59-56 with just under eight minutes remaining.

Holder made two free-throws before Hollis-Jefferson made one. After a basket by Barnes, McConnell scored and ASU’s lead held at four.

Johnson scored before Barnes made two free-throws. Johnson then made two of his own, but Blakes hit a three. After a McConnell layup, Jacobson scored and the Sun Devils went up five with 3:17 left.

York made a free-throw and Barnes made two before McConnell scored to bring the Wildcats within four.

Soon after, Barnes made a three with a man and his face and that was all the Sun Devils would need.
