Wildcats hang on to defeat Bruins

Arizona survived a 17-0 run by UCLA in the second half to defeat the Bruins 57-47 Saturday night. Read on for a complete recap of the win.

It may not have been pretty, but Arizona did just enough to defeat UCLA 57-47 Saturday night at McKale.

Norman Powell scored and Bryce Alford made a three. Kevin Looney then made two free-throws and UCLA took a 7-0 lead six minutes into the game.

Dusan Ristic proceeded to come in for Kaleb Tarczewski and went to work, scoring three consecutive baskets to bring the Wildcats within 7-6 with 11:45 left in the first half.

Alford made a three, but Gabe York hit a three and long two before Brandon Ashley scored. After a three-point play by Alford, Ashley scored again and Arizona took a 15-13 lead with 7:30 remaining in the first half.

Powell went one of two from the line before Ristic scored. A three by York then forced a UCLA timeout with Arizona’s leads at 20-14.

Alford scored and York made two free-throws. Stanley Johnson then got on the board with two from the line and Tony Parker did as well.

Ristic made two free-throws and a bucket by Elliott Pitts and T.J. McConnell forced a timeout. Ristic then scored before the half ended and Arizona took a 32-18 into halftime.

Looney made a three to start the half and then hit a long two. A dunk by Powell then forced Sean Miller to call timeout with the Wildcats’ lead cut to seven with 16:42 left.

Alford and Looney then hit consecutive three-pointers and the Bruins forced another timeout with the lead cut to one.

Powell scored and Alford made two free-throws to continues the Bruins’ run. A basket by Hollis-Jefferson ended it at 17-0, but Powell and Tarczewski exchanged baskets and the Bruins led 37-36 with 11:35 left.

Alford and McConnell exchanged baskets before Johnson made two free-throws and Tarczewski added another to put Arizona up two at the eight minute mark.

After a free-throw by Ashley, Powell got a layup. Tarczewski then scored off the glass and Arizona’s lead held at three.

Alford made two free-throws and York proceeded to make a three. Johnson then got in the lane and scored to give Arizona a 49-43 lead with 3:40 left.

McConnell made a free-throw and Johnson did as well to put Arizona up eight with about two minutes left. Alford scored to cut the lead to six and a dunk by Hamilton then made it a four point game with 1:36 left.

McConnell then made a jumper and two free-throws to put Arizona up eight and seal the game.
