Postgame Analysis: Arizona vs Colorado

Arizona laid the beatdown on Colorado on Thursday night, beating the Buffs 82-54 on the road. Read on to find out more about the win, including who the player of the game was, the key moments, and more.

Arizona pulled away early and stayed ahead for the rest of the night, beating Colorado 82-54. Here’s a closer look at what happened:

Arizona Player of the Game:

Kaleb Tarczewski – Despite only finishing with three rebounds, Tarczewski was instrumental in helping Arizona pull away in the second half, as he finished with 14 points. He scored eight straight early in the first five minutes of the second period.

Tarczewski also played great defense throughout the night, holding Josh Scott to just nine points in the game. The center was not a huge force on the glass and did not block any shots, but was able to alter some shots and was a presence inside.

Key Moments:

  • Arizona jumped out to an early lead on Thursday following eight big points from Gabe York. The Wildcats doubled up the Buffs 20-10 on York’s second three pointer of the night just seven minutes into the game.

  • Colorado used an 8-2 run just before halftime to cut the Wildcats lead to single digits, but Arizona had other ideas. Rondae Jefferson hit two free throws and Stanley Johnson tipped in a missed shot from T.J. McConnell as the Wildcats went into halftime up 37-25.

  • The Wildcats started to pull away in the second half, using an 8-2 run in the first five minutes to take a 19-point lead. Kaleb Tarczewski scored all eight points for Arizona during that span and the Wildcats never looked back in the route.

    Stat of the Night:

92 - One of Arizona’s most biggest criticisms this season has been the poor free throw shooting on the road and in close games. The Wildcats made 23 of 25 shots from the charity stripe in the win over Colorado and it was one of the main factors in how Arizona was able to win by so much. The Wildcats finished 92-percent from the line and made more free throws than the Buffs attempted (21).

    General Thoughts:

  • This one was over early as Arizona came out to play and dominated on the road. Winning on the road is never easy, but they played good early and were able to let some of the key players rest in the second half. The Wildcats used several runs throughout the game to pull away and after the first few minutes it was clear that Colorado wasn’t winning this one.

  • Gabe York deserves some credit for what he has done the last two games. He was one of the key contributors in the win over UCLA and hit many key shots in the game Thursday, all coming from beyond the arc. He finished with 14 points, five rebounds, and three assists.

The shooting guard has also stepped up his defensive game, playing solid defense in the last few games and registering a block in the win.

    Sean Miller Quotable:

“I told the team afterwards that this was one of those games, that I really have a great feeling about being their coach, about all of us being on the same team," Miller said.

"Reason why I say it is that I really felt about four days ago that our practices and the collective attitude of our team has never been better. And our preparation going into this game is what you want, especially this late in the year.

    Wildcat Quotable:

”"Our team has found its niche," York said. "We're all playing at a very high level. Our team is jelling together really well."
