Although the 2015 Arizona basketball recruiting class includes maybe the best pure scorer in the nation in Allonzo Trier and raw wing athlete in Ray Smith, Wolfsboro (N.H.) Brewster Academy 2015 combo guard Justin Simon is the prospect that might be most ready to play on the defensive end of the court.
In an effort to further improve his game, Simon transferred from Temecula (Calif.) Valley High School to Brewster Academy last fall.
“The move to Brewster was everything I wanted it to be,” Simon said. “I wanted to get away and learn to go to school and play on my own. It’s helped me grow up.
“I got very good coaching back in California, but it is a little different at Brewster. There are so many good players and if you don’t practice hard there is another guy that can play.”
Simon sees much of the same focus at the University of Arizona.
“A big part of me going there had to do with playing against good players in practice," he said. "You know with Coach Miller it’s about getting better each day.
“I love the way they are playing. Every game it seems they shut the other team down and someone new puts up a bunch of points. It’s really good seeing them compete for such a high seed. I hope they win it all.”
Make no mistake about it, Simon is well aware of what will be expected of him next season.
“It’s all about defense," he said. "I’m trying to make it so I can guard as many players as possible. The coaches just want me to be ready.
“Offensively, it’s kind of the same thing. I need to continue to work on my handles and my jumper. If a team leaves me open I have to make them pay for it.”
