Similar to last year, Arizona football has received a few early high-profile commitments and Arizona made a local statement on Saturday when Salpointe Catholic defensive lineman Justin Holt made his decision to become a Wildcat.
“It was just time to commit,” Holt said. “It really felt good to have some of the best places in the country recruiting me, but it was always in the back of my mind that I was going to probably end up at Arizona.
"The more I got to know the coaches and see the direction that everything was headed, it just seemed like a fit. Plus the success they have with kids from my school helps too."
It also helps that Arizona is looking to land defensive linemen that can contribute right away.
“They think I can come in and play defensive tackle early," Holt said. "It’s a position of need and they want to be able to play as many good guys on the defensive line as possible.”
Holt knows what he has to do to get that point.
“I’ve got to continue to get bigger and better," he said. "I already live in the weight room and I have to continue to get my lifts up.
“On the field it’s all about maintaining my gap while exploding past the defense. I’ve gotten a lot better at that, but it’s always on my mind.”
The local three-star can now focus on capping his high school career with a state title.
“It feels good that I have everything out of the way and my senior season is all mine," Holt said. "I’ve seen one of the best teams ever out of here and it would be great to go out like that again.”
