Arizona is Elite

Arizona defeated Xavier 68-60 on Thursday night to advance to the Elite Eight. Read on for a complete recap of the victory.

Arizona knew it wouldn't be easy, but the Wildcats did just enough to defeat Xavier 68-60 Thursday night at the Staples Center.

With the win, the Wildcats are in the Elite Eight in a rematch against Wisconsin.

Stanley Johnson started the scoring off with a jumper and T.J. McConnell made two consecutive baskets.

Dee Davis and Matt Stainbrook then scored before Brandon Ashley and Jalen Reynolds did as well. A basket by Rondae Hollis-Jefferson proceeded to put the Wildcats up 10-6 with 13:42 left in the half.

Reynolds and J.P. Macura scored to tie the game at 10 and force Sean Miller to call timeout.

Elliott Pitts made a three and James Farr score. Stainbrook then exchanged baskets with Johnson before Parker Jackson-Cartwright got on the board.

Stainbrook scored again and Kaleb Tarczewski got his first basket. Trevon Bluiett got a basket, but a three by Johnson gave Arizona a 22-18 lead with 6:50 remaining in the half.

Stainbrook got a basket and Remy Abell got two free-throws. Johnson made a three from the corner and after a basket by Reynolds, Gabe York hit a three to put Arizona up four.

Davis and Stainbrook proceeded to score before the half ended and both teams went into halftime tied at 28.

Stainbrook started the half with two free-throws and McConnell hit a jumper. Able then made a three before Tarczewski dunked it. Hollis-Jefferson’s free-throw tied the game and Davis then made a shot. A bucket by Ashley proceeded to tie the game at 35 at the media timeout.

Davis and York exchanged threes before Reynolds scored. Stainbrook made two free-throws and York made another three. Stainbrook then scored yet again to give Xavier the 44-41 lead with 11:37 left.

Tarczewski made two free-throws, but Reynolds scored. Johnson made to from the line and McConnell got a jumper. Davis responded with a three-point play and layup before a shot by McConnell cut Xavier’s lead to 51-49.

Reynolds made two free-throws and Tarczewski scored in the paint. McConnell then hit two from the line, as did McConnell. After a free-throw from Davis, McConnell made a three that gave the Wildcats a 58-54 lead with 3:51 remaining.

Stainbrook made one free-throw and Ashley made two. Myles Davis also made two, but Ashley hit a jumper and Tarczewski two free-throws to put Arizona up 64-57 with 1:45 left.

Myles Davis hit a three out of a timeout to bring Xavier within four. McConnell made two free-throws with 32 seconds to put the Wildcats ahead by six. Hollis-Jefferson then made two of his own and Arizona was on to the Sweet 16.
