McCoy wants to be the best

Brandon McCoy is one of the best players in the west for 2017. Read on to see what drives him, what schools are recruiting him, and more.

San Diego Morse center Brandon McCoy is one of the top players in the west in 2017 due in large part to his rapid rate of improvement.

“It’s good playing against such good competition, because I am just trying to get better every day,” McCoy said at the recent Pangos All-American Camp. “This is one of the best ways to do it.

“I have improved tremendously by working on my jumper and my footwork and defensive motor. Just worrying about if somebody is going to score in the paint on me, it is about being alert.”

When watching McCoy in action, his strengths are apparent right away.

“My strength is in my ability to put it on the floor for a player my size and being able to face up and take my man off the dribble,” he said. “On defense it is always being alert and blocking shots and not letting anybody dunk on me.

“If you are going to try to dunk on me, if I don’t block it I am going to push you. I’m not going to let anybody dunk on me. That’s my heart. I want to be the best.”

It’s that mindset that has led to schools such as Michigan State, Arizona, UCLA, UConn, and Oregon reportedly recruiting McCoy the hardest.

“Arizona has high interest in me,” he said. “Sean Miller called me to offer me a scholarship and I am highly honored that they want me to be a part of their program. I am humbled to be in this position.”

When looking at his options, McCoy won’t be focusing on just basketball.

“The atmosphere, not just with basketball, but with academics,” he said. “I want to focus on my major and be successful as possible, both on and off the court.”

Still, McCoy has goals on the court as well.

“I am not at my goal yet,” he said. “I want to be the number one player in the country, not just now, but in the future.”
