Utsey knew it was time

Defensive lineman Markell Utsey committed to Arizona on Tuesday. Read on to see why he made the decision to do so and more.

Arizona received a flurry of commitments two weeks ago, but Little Rock (Ark.) Parkview 2016 defensive tackle Markell Utsey wasn’t one of them.

That changed on Tuesday.

“I wasn’t ready to commit after the visit, but I am now,” Utsey said. “I knew that Arizona was the school that I was going to probably end up at, but I had to get home and think about things for a week or so and talk things over with family and coaches.

“I mean, this is a big decision. Being from Arkansas, Arizona isn’t exactly close. But the more I thought about it and I looked at how much Arizona wanted me, it just made sense to go ahead and commit.”

Utsey provides the size that Arizona is lacking along the defensive line.

“They think I can be a perfect fit on that three man front," he said. "I’m a pretty flexible dude. I play on a four man line right now and I’ve been able to slide in and out. The UA coaches like this because they can see me being on the inside or outside on their 3 man line.”

Meanwhile, Utsey is going about reshaping his body.

“Right now I’m a little over 300," he said. "The weight is good, but I’m always looking to get stronger and possibly more explosive.

"That was one of the things that I was thinking about when I toured Arizona, working out in that amazing weight room they have. I can’t wait to get started.”
