Football picks for the weekend of 9/8

Last week I was 9-3. Not too bad. Most of my scores were close, although on blowouts I tended not to give the powerhouse team enough credit. Unfortunately when I missed, I missed pretty bad. Picking ‘Bamma over UCLA wasn't too bad, but I had Colorado State winning a close one (they lost by 27) and had Oregon State winning by two touchdowns (lost by 20). In case you still care, here are my picks for the week.

Pac-10 games

Arizona (1-0) vs. Idaho (0-1)

I picked this one in the scouting report earlier in the week. I'll stick with my picks. The Cats are just too good for Idaho.

ARIZONA 31, Idaho 10

Arizona State (0-0) vs. SDSU (0-1)

The Aztecs aren't as bad as they showed against Arizona. The Devils are still a mystery with a new coach. The Devils have great line play on both sides of the ball, and that could be the difference. As much as I'd like to root against the Devils, I think they win,

ASU 24, SDSU 17

Cal (0-1) vs. BYU (2-0)

BYU has been a scoring machine while the Bears have been a turnover machine. Before the season started I thought the Bears would win this one. Now I'm betting on the Cougars.

BYU 38, Cal 31

Oregon (1-0) vs. Utah (0-0)

The Ducks defense struggled against an average Wisconsin offense. However Wisconsin is better than Utah. The Ducks should roll.

Ducks 44, Utes 20

Oregon State (0-1) at New Mexico State

Oregon State showed that they were overrated in the preseason. A second non-conference road game could be another pit fall. It could be, but it won't. Look for the Beavers to rebound.

OSU 48, NM St. 20

Stanford (0-0) vs. Boston College (1-0)

Boston College looked impressive against West Virginia, while Stanford remains a mystery. The Cardinal host this one, but I'll go with the Eagles.

BC 21, Stanford 20

UCLA (1-0) at Kansas (0-1)

This is a great match-up between two of college basketball's great programs…Wait, ooops, wrong sport. Bruins in a rout.

UCLA 51, KU 10

USC (1-0) vs. Kansas State (0-0)

For the first time in a decade the Wildcats play a team of note in the early part of the season. Will Snyder's boys step up? Probably. As much as I'd like to pick the Pac-10, the Wildcats have been the better team as of late.

Kansas State 27, USC 24

Washington (0-0) vs. Michigan (1-0)

The Wolverines looked suspect against Miami (OH) last week, while the Huskies are breaking in a new quarterback. Michigan's one game makes the difference.

Mich 17, UW 14

Washington State (1-0) at Boise State (0-0)

Wazzu looked strong against Idaho. Boise has been good the past few years, but Koetter is gone.

WSU 37, BSU 17

National games:

#23 Wisconsin (1-1) vs. #19 Fresno State (2-0)

Can the Bulldogs do it for a third straight week? As much as I want Fresno to win, I just don't think they can do it on the road this week. Wisconsin is better that Colorado.

Badgers 24, Bulldogs 21

Toledo vs. Temple

Temple has a lot to prove after being voted out of the Big East. Toledo has nothing left to prove after competing with the Big-10 for two straight years. Big-10 is better than the Big East.

Toledo 20, Temple 13

Colorado (1-1) vs. San Jose State (0-1)

The Buffs tour of the West Coast mid-majors continues this week. San Jose State played the Trojans tough, while Colorado rebounded from a week one loss to pound Colorado State. The Spartans aren't better than the Rams, but they will play better. Still it won't be enough.

Colorado 28, San Jose St. 17

#8 Tennessee (1-0) vs. Arkansas (1-0)

Arkansas won ugly last week, while Tennessee rolled over Syracuse. Tennessee is just too good.

Vols 31, Hogs 17

#2 Florida (1-0) vs. Louisiana-Monroe

Florida should be ashamed for scheduling these kind of games. First Marshall now Monroe. At least Kansas State is playing USC. I had to give myself one gimme game.

Gators 63, Monroe 20

#5 Nebraska (2-0) vs. #17 Notre Dame

This is the game of the week. Nebraska hasn't looked good and is still 2-0. Many feel that the Huskers are ripe for the picking. Not in Lincoln, not by Notre Dame, not by Bob Davie.

Huskers 27, Irish 17
