Phoenix St. Mary’s 2018 big man K.J. Hymes is a player who figures to see his recruiting stock take off in the coming years, so it makes sense that Arizona had him on campus this past weekend.
“Going to Arizona was a real eye opener,” Hymes said. “Honestly, it was just a great time. Seeing so many people out there for a practice scrimmage was incredible.
"Then you see the other recruits that were there and it just seems like every player in the country is looking at maybe playing for the U of A.”
Hymes has a good understanding of why he is such an intriguing prospect.
“I would say I am a really big wing," he said. "I keep growing and I try to do a little bit of everything on the court. It helps that I can play inside and out. Hopefully, I get to the point where I have the size to play all three of the frontcourt positions.
"Either way, I would have to say I’m very happy with how things are going for me. The thing about me is that I just need to get stronger. When I play against older guys that have been in the weight room it really forces to me to play even harder.”
Hymes' recruitment figures to take a backseat during the next few months.
“I was supposed to visit Cal, but I wasn’t able to get a ticket, so right now there isn’t anything scheduled," Hymes said. "That is okay with me because I am totally focused on this coming season and hopefully getting back to the point where we can win State.”
