Arizona won its only exhibition game 90-54 on Sunday night. Here's a closer look at what happened:
Player of the Game:
Ryan Anderson - The senior transfer from Boston College got his first real action in an Arizona uniform and didn't disappoint. Anderson finished the game with a double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. The forward was easily the best player on the floor for the Wildcats and should continue to be for the remainder of the season.
- Arizona opened the game on a 12-0 run over the first four minutes of action. Kaleb Tarczewski scored six points, hitting two long jumpers during the run that gave Arizona a lead it would never relinquish.
- Three minutes into the second half, Anderson took an inbounds pass from Mark Tollefsen and slammed it home. After a quick bucket at the other end Tarczewski threw down a dunk in transtion off a Kadeem Allen pass and ignited the crowd and gave the Wildcats a 45-32 lead.
- With 10:28 left in the game, Gabe York hit the Wildcats' first three pointer of the night. It gave Arizona its largest lead of the night. After a timeout, Allonzo Trier stole the ball and took it to the hole to but his team up by 20.
Stat of the Game:
53 - Arizona ignited for 53 points in the second half of Sunday's contest, led by 11 points from Trier. The 53 points was just one shy of Chico State's total for the entire game. The Wildcats were able to survive a slow first half and put the pressure on late in the game to pull away for good.
The Arizona team that showed up in the first half of the game looked like a team that was still trying to figure itself out. The Wildcats had seven turnovers before halftime and only three after that. Arizona struggled to pull away in the first half, but was able to make some adjustments in the second half.
As with some of Arizona's past teams, the Wildcats may start games slow. The one thing to remember is that many of the players on this team haven't played together in real games yet and it will take some time for them to feel each other out on the court.
Sean Miller Quotable:
"The one constant for us tonight was Ryan Anderson," Sean Miller said. "He played in tonight's game like he has practiced all year. I mentioned the gold jersey which is given to the player each week who plays the best statistically in anything live, the most rebounds, the most points, negatives, turnovers, and fouls. He's won the gold jersey for six consecutive weeks. We've never had a player dominate the action like that."
"I felt great," Anderson said about his performance. "I've been waiting a long time to play. I think it showed in my energy level. I think as a team we played really hard. It was just awesome to play in a great crowd like that. It got us ready to play today."
