A closer look at Arizona's 37-30 victory over Utah

Arizona upset Utah 37-30 on senior night in Arizona Stadium. Read on to find out how Arizona did it, which senior forced a turnover, and more.

Arizona defeated Utah 37-30 in a double overtime thriller on senior night. Here's a closer look at what happened:

  • Anu Solomon opened the game firing on all cylinders. The junior completed five of his first eight passes, marching his team down the field for two consecutive scoring drives. Solomon finished the game completing 17 of his 27 passes, including two touchdowns. The sophomore also got his legs going for most of the night, rushing ten times for 86 yards. Although he played well, Solomon did make a major mistake to start the second half, throwing a red zone interception, but made up for it, scoring a rushing touchdown before leaving the game with an injury.

____________

    • Nick Wilson started the game for the Wildcats, but never really got going on the night. He carried the ball just six times for 27 yards and left the game with an injury in the second quarter. Jared Baker filled in when Wilson went down and played respectably, carrying the ball 13 times for 67 yards.

____________

    • Early in the second quarter Arizona forced its first turnover of the game. Travis Wilson's pass was broken up by Jarvis McCall and popped into the air where a waiting Jamar Allah was waiting to haul it in. It was the senior's second interception of the season and of his career.

____________

    • Despite starting slow, Utah's offense got rolling towards the end of the first half and carried it over into the third quarter. The two-headed attack of Wilson and Devontae Booker chipped away at the Arizona defense all night. Wilson threw for 219 yards and picked up another 31 yards on the ground. Booker carried the ball 34 times for 145 yards and a touchdown.

____________

    • Arizona went to the air for the majority of the game and no one benefited more than Cayleb Jones. The junior grabbed five catches, totalling 126 yards and a touchdown. It was Jones' third game on the season with 100 or more yards receiving.

____________

    • With the win over tenth ranked Utah, Arizona has now defeated a top-ten opponent in all four seasons under Rich Rodriguez. The Wildcats beat USC, Oregon (twice), and now Utah.

____________

    • The hero of the game turned out to be senior quarterback Jerrard Randall. The signal caller only completed one of his five passes, but it was the most important play of the game. Randall threw a perfect 25-yard strike to Nate Phillips in the end zone, putting the Wildcats ahead for good.

____________

    • Arizona and Utah battled it out to a tie in regulation and went to two overtime periods before the Wildcats came away with the win. The last overtime game Arizona played in was in Rodriguez's inaugural season in Tucson when the Wildcats lost to Stanford on the road. The last time Arizona played in a double-overtime game was in 2010 when the Wildcats lost to Arizona State on a blocked PAT.

____________

  • Even though Arizona's defense has struggled with pressuring the opposing team in the past, the Wildcats ammassed four sacks in the game, including two in overtime. It is the highest total of the season.
