Arizona didn’t play well defensively, but its offense was effective all night, as the Wildcats defeated Boise State 88-76 Thursday at McKale.
Anthony Drmic opened the game with a three and Mikey Thompson put Boise up 5-0. However, Gabe York made two consecutive threes to answer.
Drmic then scored again and Chandler Hutchison got on the board. Mark Tollefsen proceeded to make a three and Kadeem Allen and James Webb exchanged hoops as Boise State led 12-11 at the media timeout.
Thompson made two free-throws and then beat Elliot Pitts to the rim for a layup. Parker Jackson-Cartwright scored and Dusan Ristic and David Wacker exchanged hoops before a bucket by Ristic brought the Wildcats within 18-17.
Kaleb Tarczewski got on the board and Drmic responded before Tarczewski scored again. Both Nick Duncan and York scored, as Duncan got another basket.
Jackson-Cartwright and Duncan proceeded to exchange threes and Boise took a 27-26 lead with about eight minutes left in the half.
Webb scored and Jackson-Cartwright added another three. Webb and Ryan Anderson exchanged baskets, but Webb scored again and Duncan made a three. A three by York then cut the Broncos’ lead to 36-34 with 3:42 remaining in the half.
Allonzo Trier scored his first points of the night at the free-throw line, but Duncan hit a three. York also made two free-throws and Duncan hit another three as a basket by York had Arizona within two.
Jackson-Cartwright proceeded to score four consecutive points to end the half and Arizona went into halftime up 44-42.
Webb made two free-throws to start the half and Allen hit a jumper. Webb and Allen both hit threes before Webb made two free-throws.
York proceeded to get a three-point play, but Webb scored again and Boise State remained within one. A bucket by Tollefsen extended the lead to three a few minutes into the second half.
Trier made two free-throws and Webb hit a three. However, Trier scored again and made a three right after. Webb responded with a three-point play and Trier hit another three to give Arizona a 63-57 lead with 13:14 left.
Duncan made a three and Jackson-Cartwright hit two free-throws. Webb made one of two, but a there by Pitts extended the lead to 68-61.
Webb answered with a three and Allen made one of two free-throws. Thompson and Allen exchanged baskets, but a dunk by Trier gave Arizona a 73-66 lead with over eight minutes left.
Duncan made a free-throw and Thompson got in the lane. Anderson and Hutchison exchanged baskets before Ristic made two free-throws. Wacker made a free-throw and Ristic scored in the post to give Arizona a 79-72 lead.
Duncan made one of two free-throws, but a dunk by Anderson put the Wildcats up 81-73 with 3:57 left.
Drmic hit a free-throw, but York made a three and two free-throws of his own to put Arizona up 12 with about two minutes remaining.
After a bucket by Thompson, Tarczewski got a dunk and that would be all Arizona would need.
