Arizona took too long to get going and the deficit was simply too big, the Arizona State defeated the Wildcats 52-37 at Sun Devil Stadium.
Arizona started on its own 25 with a 12-yard run by Jerrard Randall. Nick Wilson then ran for no gain and two incompletions led to a punt.
ASU got the ball on its own 16 and started with a four-yard run by Kalen Ballage. He then lost a yard, but Mike Bercovici found Devin Lucien for five yards and Davonte’ Neal was called for a headbutt to give the Sun Devils a first down.
Ballage proceeded to pick up three yards on first down and Lucien gained three in the air, but an incomplete pass and punt gave the Wildcats the ball on their own 28.
After an incomplete pass, Johnny Jackson gained five yards. Cayleb Jones then got the first down, but Randall fumbled on the next play and ASU took over on the Arizona 49.
ASU and Arizona exchanged two drives each before the Sun Devils took over on their own 34. After a completion to Tim White for no gain, Lucien burned Cam Denson for 58 yards. Demario Richard then scored from nine yards out and the Sun Devils went up 7-0 with the extra point.
Yet again, Arizona went three and out and ASU got the ball on its own 22. D.J. Foster ran for five yards and then picked up a 14-yard reception.
On the next play, Lucien caught a 59-yard touchdown and the Sun Devils took a 14-0 lead with over a minute left in the first.
Arizona started on its own 25 with a 14-yard completion to Jones, but nothing else was going on and the Wildcats had to punt.
ASU took over on its six with a 13-yard run by Ballage that ended the first quarter with a 14-point lead and momentum.
The first play of the quarter was a four-yard pass to White, but Denson got a pick six on the next play and the extra point cut the lead to 14-7 early in the second.
ASU got the ball on its own 22 and on second down Lucien caught an 11-yard pass. Richard then ran for five and followed it up with a 37-yard gain.
On second down, White caught a 10-yard pass. Foster ran for three yards, but Neal was called for pass interference and Bercovici scored two plays later as ASU led 21-7 with 10:33 left in the first half.
Arizona had possession on its own 25 and Brandon Dawkins came in at quarterback. He ran for nine yards on second down and gained 26 more on first.
On second down, Dawkins hit Jackson for 28 yards. Two plays later, he found Darrell Cloy for six yards, but could not convert on third and shirt.
Casey Skowron then came in and made a 22-yard field goal that cut ASU’s lead to 21-10 with 5:47 remaining in the half.
ASU took over on its own 30 with a nine-yard and four-yard run from Richard. Lucien then caught an 11-yard pass and two plays later, Jalen Harvey burned Neal for a 41-yard touchdown as the extra point put the Sun Devils up 28-10.
Once again, the Wildcats went three and out, as ASU got the ball on its own 22. Ballage ran 65 yards on first down, but ASU had to settle for a 29-yard field goal to go up 31-10 at half.
Bercovici fumbled on the first drive of the second half and Arizona got the ball on the ASU 41. On second down, Dawkins hit Jackson for 16 yards and Wilson ran for three yards on the next play.
Eventually Arizona had to settle for a 37-yard field goal to cut the lead to 31-13 with 11:32 left in the third.
ASU took over on its own 13 and Richard gained one yard on the ground. After an incomplete pass, Lucien caught a pass for 26 yards.
The Sun Devils were called for holding, but Lucien gained ten on the next play. The drive eventually fell short and Arizona got the ball on its own eight.
Phillips caught a 17-yard pass on first down and two plays later, Dawkins ran for 40 yards. The Wildcats had a third and long, but Jones drew a pass interference on third down.
Baker ran for a loss of one and Dawkins took a sack, as the drive ended with a 46-yard field goal by Skowron to cut the lead to 31-16 with over three minutes left in the third.
Arizona started on its own three with a two-yard run. On the next play, Trey Griffey caught a 95-yard touchdown and the extra point brought Arizona to within 31-23 with 46 second left in the third.
ASU took the ball on its own 26 and a three-yard loss by Ballage ended the third quarter with the Wildcats in striking distance.
Foster ran for three yards to start the fourth and White caught a 17-yard pass. On second down, Lucien went for seven yards and Gary Chambers followed with five more.
Bercovici ran for ten on third down and Ballage picked up three and then 11 more. Tellas Jones was called for a face mask and after an 11-yard pass to White, Foster scored from a yard out and the extra point put the Sun Devils up 38-23 with 10:14 left.
Needing an answer, Arizona started on its own 25 with a 10-yard pass to Jackson. Dawkins was sacked twice in a row, but found Griffey for 43 yards and the first down
Three plays later, Phillips got a first down with a ten-yard pass. Another three plays and Dawkins found Tyrell Johnson for a 17-yard touchdown as the extra point cut the ASU lead to 38-30.
On Arizona State’s ensuing drive, the Wildcats forced a punt and took over on their own six. Dawkins ran for four yards on first down, but threw a pick six to Kadeem Orr two plays later and that would be more than enough for the Sun Devils.
