Arizona played its worst game of the season, but did just enough to escape Santa Clara in a 75-73 win in the opening game of the Wooden Legacy.
Ryan Anderson opened the game up with a bucket, but Jared Brownridge scored. Gabe York then got a basket and Brownridge hit a three.
Kaleb Tarczewski and Jarvis Pugh exchanged baskets before Kadeem Allen and Allonzo Trier got a bucket to put the Wildcats up 10-7 at the media timeout.
Parker Jackson-Cartwright got on the board and Pugh scored again. Dusan Ristic and Brownridge exchanged scores as the Wildcats led 14-11 with 11:48 left in the first half.
Tarczewski scored again, added a free-throw, and got another dunk before Mark Tollefsen made a three. Matt Hauser ended an 8-0 run, but Tollefsen’s bucket had the Wildcats up 24-13 with 7:42 left in the first half.
Elliott Pitts and Hauser both scored, as Jackson-Cartwright and Tollefsen got consecutive buckets to put the Wildcats up 30-15.
Jackson-Cartwright made two free-throws and Brownridge answered with a three-point play. Kai Healy got his first basket and a three by Brownridge forced a timeout with Arizona’s lead down to 32-23 with 3:39 remaining in the first half.
Brownridge made two free-throws and Evan Wardlow scored, as a basket by Allen put Arizona up 34-27 at half.
Brownridge started the half with the three and K.J. Feagin scored. Brownridge then got another basket and Ryan Anderson got two consecutive hoops. A dunk by Tollefsen proceeded to give Arizona a 40-34 lead.
Brownridge made two free-throws and Trier hit a three. Feagin and Tarczewski exchanged buckets before Anderson got a bucket.
Healy hit a three, but Allen responded with a three-point play. Brownridge proceeded to hit a three of his own and Feagin scored to bring Santa Clara within four with 11:47 remaining.
Anderson made two from the line and Matt Hubbard responded with a three. Brownridge then made two free-throws and Tarczewski scored in the paint. Brownridge hit another three and Tollefsen scored on a rebound to give the Wildcats a 56-54 lead.
York made two free-throws and Hubbard hit a three. Tarczewski made one of two from the line and Tollefsen scored. Two free-throws by Anderson then extended the lead to 63-57 with under four minutes left.
Pugh made a free-throw and Brownridge made two before he hit a three to tie the game at 63 with 1:49 left.
Anderson scored, but Brownridge matched and two missed free-throws by Pugh at the end of regulation put the game into overtime.
Wardlow hit one free-throw in overtime, but a three by York gave Arizona a two-point lead. Two free-throws by Brownridge then tied the game at 68 with 3:04 left in overtime.
York came up with a three-point play and Brownridge made two free-throws to cut the Arizona lead to one.
Anderson got a basket to extend Arizona’s lead to three, but Brownridge hit a shot from behind the arc to tie the game at 73.
York made one of two free-throws with four seconds left and Anderson added one more as a last second-three missed and Arizona hung on.
