Despite a late run by UNLV, Arizona held on for an 82-70 win Saturday night at McKale.
Dusan Ristic made two free-throws to open the game and then hit a shot in the paint. Dwayne Morgan and Stephen Zimmerman answered before Gabe York got on the board.
Ike Nwamu and Kadeem Allen scored, but Nwamu scored again. Ristic and Nwamu exchanged buckets before Ristic got another bucket and a shot by Zimmerman put the Runnin’ Rebels up 13-12 at the media timeout.
Jerome Seagers made a jumper, but Justin Simon answered with a floater. A two by Morgan then out UNLV up 17-14 with 11:24 left in the half.
Ristic made one of two free-throws, but Derrick Jones scored off a turnover. Mark Tollefsen then got his first bucker as Zimmerman matched it. Ristic proceeded to hit a three and Ryan Anderson got a dunk to force timeout with the Wildcats up 22-21.
Jones scored off the glass, but Ristic put back an offensive rebound. Nwamu then made a three and a layup by Anderson tied the game at 26 with 7:26 remaining in the first half.
Allen made two free-throws, but Ben Carter scored. Allen then made a shot and Dave Rice was called for a technical. York made one free-throw and Allen proceeded to make his.
Allonzo Trier hit a three and Seagers responded with a bucket. Anderson made one of two free-throws before Jones got a dunk. However, a shot by Trier gave the Wildcats a 39-32 lead with 2:57 left in the half.
Anderson and Jordan Cornish exchanged hoops before Ristic made two free-throws. Nwamu then made two from the line and a free-throw by Anderson gave Arizona a 44-36 lead at the half.
Patrick McCaw got his first points of the night, but Allen and Trier responded with a basket each. Carter then got a dunk and Miller called timeout with Arizona up 48-40.
Anderson made two free-throws and Trier added one. Carter and Cornish added a basket before Seagers did as well. York responded with a three, but Carter scored in the paint and Jones made a three to cut the lead to 54-51 with 11:54 remaining.
Ristic scored and Cornish made a free-throw. Ristic then made two of his own before Trier got a bucket in the lane and made two from the line to give Arizona a 62-52 lead with 7:44 left.
Anderson made two free-throws, but Carter responded. MccCaw then made two from the line as well as Anderson came back with a three-point play. A free-throw by Trier and Allen then proceeded to put the Wildcats up 69-56 with 5:14 remaining.
Morgan and Nwamu both made two free-throws each to get within nine with just under four minutes left.
Jones came up with a three-point play and McCaw then scored. Allen got a bucket and York added a three-point play of his own.
However, a three by Nwamu cut the lead to 74-68 with 1:49 remaining. Trier came out of the timeout with a layup and that would be all for the Rebels.
