Arizona controlled Long Beach State throughout Tuesday’s game at McKale as the Wildcats won 85-70.
Nick Faust started the game with two threes before Gabe York scored in the lane and added a three of his own.
A.J. Spencer then got a bucket, as did Ryan Anderson and Kadeem Allen as Arizona led 9-8 at the media timeout.
Allonzo Trier made two free-throws before Justin Bibbins scores five consecutive points. Mark Tollefsen then got his first bucket, but Branford Jones and Dusan Ristic both hit two free-throws.
A shot by Travis Hammonds proceeded to put the 49ers up 17-15 with 11:52 left in the first half.
Trier made two free-throws, but Hammonds scored in the lane. Roschon Prince then scored and a three by Trier cut the LBSU lead to 21-20.
Chance Comanche made two free-throws before Allen scored. Anderson hit one of two and Ristic added a basket.
Prince got a basket and Bibbins added two free-throws. Trier made two as well and Prince and Allen both scored.
Prince made one of two from the line, as Allen responded with a three. A basket by Faust then cut Arizona’s lead to 34-30 with 3:24 remaining in the half.
Tollefsen made a three and Jones scored a quick two. Trier then got a steal and dunk as two free-throws by Tollefsen put the Wildcats up 41-32.
Parker Jackson-Cartwright made a three and Jones hit a jumper at the buzzer as Arizona led 44-34 at the half.
Ristic started the second half with six consecutive points and forced Long Beach State to call timeout down 16 just under two minutes into the second half.
Prince got a bucket and Faust hit a three, but York made a floater in the lane. Bibbins then hit a jumper and Trier responded with two three-pointers to put Arizona up 58-41 with 14:48 left in the game.
Mason Riggins made two buckets in a row, but Tollefsen responded with a three from the corner to keep the Wildcats up 16.
Comanche made one free-throw and Bibbins came down and hit a jumper before Ristic also went one of two from the free-throw line as Arizona led 63-47 with 11:46 remaining.
Noah Blackwell made a free and Prince scored as well. Anderson and Spencer exchanged a pair of free-throws each and Tollefsen and Anderson added four more. A three by Spencer then cut the Wildcats’ lead to 69-57 with 7:23 left.
Hammonds scored and then made one of two free-throws. Allen and Anderson had an answer, however, to put the Wildcats back up 13.
York made a three, but Prince scored and Faust did as well. A free-throw by Faust then cut Arizona’s lead to 76-65 with 3:21 remaining.
Anderson made two free-throws, but a three by Faust kept the 49ers alive. York then made two free-throws and Bibbins quickly scored. A bucket by Jackson-Cartwright and one free-throw by Trier sealed the deal as Arizona went up 83-70 with a little over a minute left.
