It can be easy for fans to assume that any Tucson high school star with a father who played at the local university would want to stay home if given the chance.
However, that wasn’t necessarily the case for Salpointe Catholic 2016 defensive tackle Justin Holt.
“Everyone just thinks because I’m from Tucson and my dad played that UofA that I was going to there if they offered me,” Holt said.
“But to me it was all about getting to the place that wanted me the most and that had the fit on the defensive line that I was looking for. If it was somewhere else, I would have gone there.”
It was an easy decision for Holt to end his recruitment.
“I think I might have gotten a little bit more attention and maybe some more Pac -12 offers if I had let things play out," he said. "I had some schools trying to get me to look at them and maybe take a visit, but it wasn’t with the passion that UA had.”
Early playing time was also a factor for Holt.
“I wanted to go to a place where I would be needed on the field and hopefully needed quickly," he said. "Arizona needs linemen and they let me know that from the beginning.
“I’m not the first guy from Salpointe to play there and there is some pride knowing that I can go out there and play in front of a bunch of my family and know that the program is behind me and expects me to contribute.”
