Thursday night was a redemption game of sorts for Gabe York, as his three-pointer with 19 seconds left put Arizona up for good en route to a 64-61 home victory over Cal on Thursday night.
Kaleb Tarczewski and Kingsley Okoroh scored to open up the game and Jaylen Brown made a three.
Allonzo Trier then got on the board and Jabari Bird did as well. A bucket by Tarczewski then cut Cal’s lead to 7-6 at the media timeout.
Kameron Rooks and Okoroh scored before a three by Bird forced Sean Miller to call timeout with the Golden Bears up 14-6 with 13:45 remaining.
Ryan Anderson made two free-throws and Rooks scored. Parker Jackson-Cartwright proceeded to make a layup, but a three by Tyrone Wallace gave Cal a 19-10 lead.
Kadeem Allen hit two free-throws and then got a layup. Bird then made two free-throws and Mark Tollefsen scored to cut the deficit to 21-16 with 7:27 left.
Jordan Matthews scored and Ivan Rabb made two free-throws. Trier then hit a three and Anderson scored.
Rooks got a bucket and Anderson proceeded to come up with a three-point play to bring the Wildcats to within three.
Anderson went one of two from the line and Bird scored as Cal went into halftime up 29-25.
Gabe York and Ryan Anderson scored before Rabb got a bucket. York then scored two consecutive baskets and Arizona went up 33-31 less than three minutes into the half.
Rabb and Anderson exchanged buckets before Tarczewski scored. Matthews then hit a floater to keep Cal within 37-35.
Brown and York both scored and Sam Singer made a free-throw Anderson got a bucket, but Bird made two from the line and Arizona led 41-40 with 11:30 left.
Tarczewski and Rabb exchanged buckets before York scored. Rabb then proceeded to get two straight baskets and put Cal up 46-45 with 7:51 left.
Trier made two free-throws, but Matthews responded with a three. Allen and Bird then exchanged baskets and Cal led 51-49 with 3:39 remaining.
Anderson made a free-throw and Rabb hit his first three of the season. Matthews made two free-throws, but a three by York cut the lead to 56-53 with 2:37 left.
Matthews made a three and Wallace scored. Anderson answered with a three-point play and a three by York cut Cal’s lead to 51-59 with 49 seconds left.
Arizona proceeded to run a play for York and he nailed the three as Cal took timeout down 62-61 with 12.7 seconds left.
Wallace missed the last shot and Tarczewski grabbed the rebound and made two ensuing free-throws to seal the deal.
