Arizona is making defensive recruiting a priority and took a big step in the right direction on Tuesday night with the commitment of Bakersfield (Calif.) Liberty defensive lineman Kurtis Brown.
“After talking it over with my mom, my mom asked me if I had an offer from all the schools recruiting me, would I still commit to the University of Arizona,” Brown said. “I said yes and so she gave me permission to commit and I did.
“I called Coach Amey and then Rodriguez. Coach Amey got emotional. He was so pumped and so was Rodriguez. I think I am going to do big things there.”
Brown recently took a visit to Tucson and it sealed the deal for the 6-foot-3, 260-pound lineman.
“It felt like home when I visited,” he said. “I love the coaching staff. They all felt like a father figure to me and the whole coaching staff is perfect for me, so I had to do it.”
One coach in particular helped lead Brown to Tucson.
“Amey was my lead recruiter,” Brown said. “Ever since they offered me, he calls me after workouts and we talk. We get away from football and have good conversations and have that bond together.”
The coaching staff’s faith in Brown was what made the difference.
“The big thing was that they truly believed me,” he said. “They felt I could do big things on and off the field. That was their emphasis and I took that to heart and I believe them.”
