The top player in the class has made his pick and it’s the Arizona Wildcats.
Phoenix Hillcrest center DeAndre Ayton surprised many when he tweeted on Tuesday afternoon that he would be announcing in a matter of hours.
He recently cut his list to Kentucky, Kansas, and Arizona and many felt he would take officials before making his decision known.
However, Ayton gave Arizona the top player in the class and one that many feel is one of the best prospects in the last decade.
It’s no secret that Ayton will be in college for only one year, but he still had a good idea of what he was looking for in a school.
“It really don't matter which school I go to,” Ayton said. “To be honest, I'm not looking for certain things in a school. I just want a relationship with a coach and have a good year in college and that's it.”
Ayton’s interest in Arizona began due in large part to Stanley Johnson.
“Stanley Johnson went there and he has good taste,” Ayton said. “I know him well. Arizona is a good school and I like them. Arizona is Arizona. Kentucky is Kentucky, Kansas is Kansas. I like those schools.”
What kind of player is Arizona getting in Ayton?
“Prospects with Ayton's size, length, athleticism and skill set are extremely rare,” Scout analyst Josh Gershon said. “He's made progress in his consistency and motor, which were two of his biggest concerns heading into his junior year. With his ability to face up and play inside, pass, rebound and block shots at his size and athleticism, there's a reason he's already very firmly on NBA teams' radars.”
