Tempe (Ariz.) Corona Del Sol point guard Alex Barcello was the first commitment in Arizona’s 2017 class and on Tuesday the Wildcats picked up the top player in the class with a verbal from DeAndre Ayton.
“I’m very excited to play with him,” Barcello said. “It’s a huge get for us. Our goal is to win a national championship and that’s what we’re going to try to accomplish when we get there.”
Barcello is familiar with Ayton and has actually played with him before.
“Not only have I seen him play before, but we were actually on the same team at the NBA Top 100 camp a few years ago,” Barcello said. “We have seen each other on the Nike circuit, so we know each other.”
Like most, Barcello has a high opinion of what Ayton will be able to bring to Arizona.
“I think the defense is going to really have to spread out and pick and choose,” he said. “He is a big, so our pick and rolls are going to be good.
“The defense is going to have to read something, whether it is coming out to guard me shooting or him hitting the inside.
“I also know from playing with him he can shoot pretty far out for a big. He has a nice jump shot, but he can also take you inside and finish well. The defense is going to have to read us and I am excited to see how we work with that.”
Barcello doesn’t want to wait until next year to play with Ayton and will now work on getting in touch with him to start getting used to each other as teammates.
“I am going to start talking with him and we’re going to see if we can get in the gym and work out so that we are building that bond and once we get to Arizona we have a great feel for each other’s game,” Barcello said.
