Arizona overcomes Bakersfield run to win

Arizona defeated Cal State Bakersfield on Tuesday night. Read on for a complete recap.

Arizona overcame a 17-0 second half run by Cal State Bakersfield to defeat the Roadrunners 78-66 Tuesday at McKale.

Jaylin Airington started the game with a three and Dedrick Basile scored. Lauri Markkanen got a dunk, but Basile quickly answered. A free-throw by Simmons then had Bakersfield up 7-3 at the media timeout.

Damiyne Durham and Rawle Alkins exchanged threes before Parker Jackson-Cartwright hit one. 

Airington then scored, but Alkins hit another three. After a bucket by Ristic, Alkins’ third three forced a timeout with the Wildcats leading 17-12 with 11:19 left in the first half.

Chance Comanche and Shon Briggs exchanged buckets before Basile scored. Brent Wrapp then hit a three and a basket by Markkanen put the Wildcats up 22-19 with 7:29 remaining in the half. 

Markkanen made two free-throws and Jackson-Cartwright hit one. Durham scored and Comanche matched it at the line.

Kobi Simmons proceeded to make a three and Comanche added a bucket. After a three by Basile, Markkanen hit a jumper to put the Wildcats up 34-24 with 3:46 left in the first half. 

Markkanen made two free-throws and Durham responded. Markkanen scored again, as did Alkins. 

After a free-throw by Alkins, Simmons made two from the line and Comanche got one of his own as the Wildcats led 44-26 at the half. 

Markkanen scored to begin the half and Justin Davis then got on the board. Ristic and Airington exchanged buckets, but a three by Alkins gave Arizona the 51-30 lead at the media timeout. 

Airington made two free-throws and Keanu Pinder scored. Briggs then got a basket and Airington made a three.

Jackson-Cartwright was called for a flagrant and Airington hit both free-throws. He then hit a three to force an Arizona timeout with the lead down to 53-42 with 12:04 left. 

Taze Moore hit a three and Airington hit consecutive buckets. Comanche made a free-throw to end the 17-0 run and Markkanen added a three.

Matt Smith scored, but was matched at the line by Simmons. Airington proceeded to hit a three as Arizona led 59-54 with 6:05 remaining.

Markkanen came up with a three-point play and then hit a jumper. Jackson-Cartwright also made a jumper and Ristic two free-throws, as a three by Basile cut the Wildcats’ lead to 68-57 with just under four minutes left. 

Simmons had a three-point play out of a timeout and Basile soon hit a jumper. Airington made a floater and free-throw to keep Bakersfield within 71-64 with 1:25 left, but two free-throws by Markkanen sealed the deal.
