Arizona may not have been bowl eligible and the season may not have gone how most would have wanted it to, but for one night everything was just fine in Tucson.
The Wildcats ran for a school record 511 yards as they defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils 56-35 Friday night at Arizona Stadium.
Arizona started on its own 25 with a four-yard run by Samajie Grant. Two plays later, Dawkins kept it and scored from 71 yards out.
The extra point put the Wildcats up 7-0 with 13:48 left.
ASU took over on its own 40 and Manny Wilkins passed to N’Keal Harry for a two-yard loss. Demario Richard ran for two yard and Kalen Ballage caught an 11-yard pass on third down.
Arizona forced third down and long, but Wilkins hit Fred Gammage for 18 yards. The Sun Devils were called for holding an eventually forced into a 53-yard field goal attempt that missed.
The Wildcats got the ball on their own 36 and started with a four-yard pass to Nate Phillips. After a short loss by Samajie Grant, Dawkins picked up the first down with a seven-yard run.
He then threw two incomplete passes and was stripped by JoJo Wicker on third down. Koron Crump scooped it and scored from 42 yards out as the extra point tied the game at seven with 7:49 left in the first.
Arizona got the ball on its own 25 and Grant ran for gains of nine, six, and one. However, the drive stalled after a four-yard run by Dawkins and Arizona punted.
The Sun Devils started on their own 34 and Gammage caught passes for six and three yards. Wilkins ran for two and after an incomplete pass, Richard gained four.
Wilkins then ran for five yards on third down, but Arizona stuffed Kalen Ballage short of the first down marker and ASU turned it over on downs.
Arizona proceeded to go three and out and gave ASU the ball on its own 19. After a holding call, Arizona was called for pass interference.
On the next play, Davonte’ Neal intercepted a pass thrown into double coverage and the Wildcats got the ball back on their own 33.
Arizona ran a reverse on first down for a 33-yard gain by Shun Brown, but a personal foul on Freddie Tagaloa brought it back a bit.
On the next play, Grant ran for 15 yards to get Arizona to the Arizona State 37-yard line.
On second down, ASU was called for pass interference and Grant ended the first quarter with an eight-yard run.
After a four-yard run by Green, Dawkins kept it for a ten-yard touchdown that gave Arizona a 14-7 lead with 14:18 left in the half.
ASU started at the 19 with a two-yard run by Ballage. Wilkins kept it for five yards and then found Ballage for eight more.
Gammage proceeded to catch an eight-yard pass before Tim White gained 14 in the air. White lost six on the next play, but Gammage got it back with a six-yard pass.
Wilkins ran for six, but threw an incomplete pass on fourth down and turned it over on downs.
The Wildcats got possession on their own 37 and on second down, Dawkins hit Phillips for a 64-yard touchdown.
The extra point proceeded to put Arizona up 21-7 with 10:08 remaining in the half.
ASU found itself in a third down situation and fumbled, giving the Wildcats the ball on the ASU 23.
Josh Kern caught a nine-yard pass and Green ran for three. Dawkins gained eight on the ground and two plays later, Green scored from a yard out.
The ensuing extra point put the Wildcats up 28-7 with over seven minutes left in the first half.
Both teams exchanged unsuccessful drives before ASU got the ball on its own six.
Richard ran for 11 before Gammage caught a seven-yard pass. Wilkins then ran for five and found Gammage for ten.
Richard gained four more and Kyle Williams got a five-yard reception. Two plays later, Ballage ran for nine.
After a one-yard gain by Ballage, Wilkins ran for three yards. Richard caught an 11-yard pass and Ballage gained seven int he air.
On the next play Wilkins hit White for a 21-yard touchdown and the extra point made it 28-14 at the half.
Arizona State started the second half on the 35 with an eight-yard run by Wilkins. Two plays later, Wilkins gained 12 more on the ground.
After a false start, Wilkins ran for four yards. Richard then caught a 26-yard pass and ran for a combined 13 yards on his next two carries.
Dane Cruikshank was called for pass interference and two plays later, Ballage scored from two yards out.
The extra point cut the Wildcats’ lead to 28-21 with 11:14 left in the third quarter.
Arizona began on its own 25 with a ten-yard run by Dawkins. Green then ran for 56 yards and Grant scored from nine yards out as the extra point put the Wildcats up 35-21 with 9:52 left in the third.
ASU responded by starting on its own 21 with a 16-yard pass to Ballage. After an incomplete pass, Richard had a six-yard reception.
Wilkins ran for five yards and two plays later, found White for 33 yards. After a three-yard pass to Gammage, Harry scored on a 16-yard reception.
The ensuing extra point cut Arizona’s lead to 35-28 with 7:29 remaining in the third quarter.
The Wildcats started on the 17 with a 52-yard run by Grant. Green ran for 26 yards and three plays later scored from a yard out.
The extra point then gave Arizona a 42-28 lead with 5:41 remaining in the third.
Both teams punted on their next possession and the Sun Devils took over on their own 31. Wilkins failed to gain any yardage on first and Richard ran for three on second to end the third quarter.
Arizona was called for pass interference on first down and targeting two plays later. After an incomplete pass, Gammage gained nine yards.
Wilkins then failed to gain a yard and Arizona got the stop on fourth to force another turnover on downs.
Arizona got the ball on its own 30 and began with a 68-yard run from Dawkins. Two plays later, Grant scored from two yards out and the extra point gave the Wildcats a 49-28 lead with 11:45 left.
Needing a response, ASU started on its 24. Ballage caught a one-yard pass and Wilkins followed with carries for six and three.
After an incomplete pass, Ballage had a seven-yard reception and Jalen Harvey had a catch for eight.
Gammage gained 22 and Ballage added a 15-yard catch. Arizona was called for roughing the passer and Wilkins hit Gammage for a seven-yard score on the next play.
The extra point cut Arizona’s lead to 49-35 with 8:29 left.
Arizona began on its own 27 with a 10-yard run from Green and Grant then scored on a 63-yard run as the extra point put the Wildcats up 56-35 with 7:45 remaining.
