Rich Rodriguez recently said that he wants to add immediate size to Arizona and 6-foot-3, 310-pound Santa Clarita (Calif) College of the Canyons defensive lineman Sione Taufahema fits that mold.
“Arizona offered me on Monday,” Taufahema said. “It was really unexpected. Last week I talked to their defensive line coach, Coach Amey, and he told me I was high on their board.
“He visited me Monday morning and told me that he was offering me a scholarship.”
Amey’s pitch to Taufahema was clear.
“He told me that I will have the chance to come in and play right away,” Taufahema said. “I fit Arizona’s defense really well and it is actually the same defense that we are running at my school now.”
Arizona is not the only school currently involved and it wants to try to lock up Taufahema before more offer.
“I have an offer from Northern Illinois and Hawaii,” Taufahema said. “I recently heard from USC and ASU told me they are going to be in contact within the next few days.
“Coach Amey told me he wants me to take an official visit in the next week or two, so I am going to go home and figure everything out with my family."
When Taufahema does take those visits, he has a good idea of what he will be looking for.
“I want to see how I vibe with the players already there,” he said. “I want to see how comfortable I am with everything.”
Taufahema is a qualifier out of high school, so he has three years to play two and is hoping to enroll early.
