Arizona advances to Sweet 16

Arizona defeated Saint Mary's 69-60 win Saturday night. Read on for a complete recap.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Arizona fell behind ten points in the first half, but put together a masterful second half to defeat Saint Mary's 69-60 to advance to the Sweet 16. 

Joe Rahon and Kadeem Allen exchanged buckets to start the game. Jock Landale then hit two in a row before Dusan Ristic answered.

A basket by Landale proceeded to put the Gaels up 8-4 at the media timeout.

Lauri Markkanen and Calvin Hermanson both scored before Sean Miller called timeout with the Wildcats trailing 10-6 with 14:51 left in the first half. 

Chance Comanche scored, but Landale got two straight buckets. Ristic then scored on the offensive glass and the Gaels led 14-10 with 11:12 remaining in the first half.

Ristic scored, but Tanner Krebs made a three. Dane Pineau then made a free-throw and Rahon scored.

Emmett Naar got on the board and Miller called timeout with the Wildcats down 22-12 with just under seven minutes left in the half. 

Comanche made one of two from the line and Markkanen did as well. Krebs hit a jumper and Markkanen responded with two free-throws to cut the lead to 24-16 with 3:43 remaining in the half. 

Markkanen and Landale exchanged a pair of free-throws each and Parker Jackson-Cartwright made a three.

Rawle Alkins and Krebs exchanged baskets before Ristic and Markkanen scored. Krebs made two free-throws and Kobi Simmons did as well as Arizona went into halftime down 30-29.

Ristic scored and Landale made a free-throw. Allen then hit a three and Hermanson responded with two straight buckets.

Alkins and Landale exchanged baskets before Allonzo Trier scored his first points of the game. Pineau and Allen both scored and the Wildcats took a 40-39 lead at the media timeout. 

Markkanen made two free-throws, but Hermanson hit a three. Pineau and Allen then exchanged buckets as the game was tied at 44 with 11:36 left. 

Rahon scored and Trier hit a three. He then made a jumper before adding two free-throws. Hermanson and Alkins proceeded to exchange buckets as Arizona led 53-48 with 7:04 left. 

Trier and Landale exchanged buckets before Landale scored. Ristic got a three-point play before Krebs made a three.

Markkanen then matched that with a three from the corner to put the Wildcats up 61-55 with 3:03 left.

Markkanen made two free-throws and Evan Fitzner scored. Allen then got to the basket and scored to put Arizona up 65-57 with over two minutes left.

A three by Herman soon cut Arizona’s lead to 65-60 with 1:51 remaining.

Trier proceeded to make three more free-throws and Allen made one to seal the victory.
