Arizona’s season is over.
The Wildcats’ defense struggled throughout the night as Xavier took advantage and defeated Arizona 73-71 Thursday night in San Jose.
Kadeem Allen opened the game with a three before Dusan Ristic scored twice. Trevon Bluiett then got on the board, but a bucket by Ristic put the Wildcats up 9-2 at the media timeout.
Ristic made a free-throw to complete the three-point play, but J.P. Macura scored. Bluiett then scored five consecutive points before Parker Jackson-Cartwright hit a three to give Arizona a 13-9 lead with 11:47 left in the half.
Kobi Simmons made one free-throw and Sean O’Mara proceeded to score. Lauri Markkanen made a three and Bluiett responded with a two.
Kaiser Gates completes a three-point play as RaShid Gaston added a bucket. Markkanen then scored and Bluiett made two free-throws to give Xavier a 20-19 lead with 7:37 remaining in the half.
Chance Comanche made two free-throws and Allonzo trier scored. Bluiett got another basket before Markkanen made two at the line.
Bluiett then hit a three and Comanche scored on the offensive glass to put the Wildcats up 27-25 with 4:17 left in the half.
Macura made two free-throws and Simmons scored. Bluiett then hit a jumper as Xavier tied the game at 29.
Tyrique Jones scored and Ristic quickly responded. Trier then got a floater before Macura made two free-throws.
Simmons made a jumper and Macura responded with a basket before Rawle Alkins hit a shit at the buzzer to give Arizona a 37-35 halftime lead.
Ristic and Malcolm Bernard scored to start the second half. Ristic made two free-throws, but Jones scored quickly.
Ristic and Macura exchanged buckets before Ristic and Bernard did the same. Bernard then hit a three and O’Mara scored to put Xavier up 48-45 less than five minutes into the half.
Alkins and Markkanen scored before Trier hit a three. However, Bernard made a three and Quentin Goodin scored to give Xavier a 53-52 lead with 10:42 left.
Trier made a three, but O’Mara scored. Trier then made a jumper and Macura scored four straight points to put Xavier up 59-57 with 7:37 remaining.
Bluiett scored, but Trier responded with seven straight points and a three by Allen forced a timeout with the Wildcats leading 67-61 and 4:26 remaining.
Jackson-Cartwright made two free-throws and Bluiett hit a three. Allen then scored, but Bernard made a three.
Bernard and Bluiett proceeded to make a pair of free-throws each to tie the game at 71 with just under two minutes left.
O’Mara scored to put Xavier up two and Arizona’s season ended only a short time after.
